The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at IBM. I was based in a location with many other interns therefore as well as the business aspect of my placement I have been able to get involved in many socials. I was able to make the most of my year, as well as doing my daily tasks I was able to get involved in big projects and events that benefit not just IBM but also the greater community.
I worked in a great team whilst on my placement, all the work I did was appreciated and I was told on many occasions how much my team valued the work I did for them. My manager and colleagues were very welcoming and made me feel very comfortable in my role and my placement.
My manager was extremely helpful on all the tasks that I carried out whether they were small or big, I knew I could ring him up at anytime without hesitation. Where extra assistance was needed on tasks my manager would ensure he spent quality time taking me through them so I would understand not only the task but the background behind it.
There were times throughout the year where I was very busy but also times where I didn't have as much to do. I found that this was the perfect balance as when I wasn't very busy I could get other foundation tasks done and when I was busy I felt like I was being given responsibility and the days went very quick.
There was no point in my placement where I felt like I wasn't given much responsibility. I have been involved in various projects and have been able to lead a lot of them on my own. I have been able to use my own initiative on a lot of tasks and therefore add value to the business.
On placement I didn't just get to develop my skills, I also got to learn a lot of new skills. I got to see how I was using skills everyday without realizing it. I was able to gain a better understanding of how businesses work and will be able to apply this to theories I learn at University, This placement allowed me to gain a greater insight of the future career I would like to pursue.
The Company
I was based at a great location where there was a good balance of senior managers as well as interns just like myself. We would all get the work done as well as having a laugh from time to time. It was a good atmosphere to work in and allowed me to enjoy my placement year more.

I can honestly say I am glad to have got a placement at a company like IBM and would like to come back as a graduate. The company has a good balance of work and social life, the organization is structured in a way that you are able to talk to senior managers and work with them on big projects even if you are just an intern.
The Culture
I was based in Warwick which is central of the country. There were many places close by which interns could go to, to socialize. Most interns lived in Leamington which is very near so we mostly went to the nightclubs there but there have been times throughout the year where we have gone to other cities such as Birmingham for nights out.
IBM have Giveback events which allow interns to get involved in other activities outside of their daily tasks which I know not many other companies do. I have been able to go back to my university to talk to other students about my placement year experience as well as going to a Carbon event at another university.
