The Role
I would say I enjoyed my placement at a rating of 8/10. I have had a few jobs ins my years at uni and before but never a 40 hour week with a proper job role. It was like a new adventure, with the previous skills under my belt I knew I could learn so much more. To be treated as an equal in such a large company at first made me feel so nervous, but soon I realised how empowered and happy it made me feel.
Going into a workplace with grown adults at first it felt quite intimidating. Yet soon I saw that I was a part of the team through being responsible for organising departmental meetings and reports that my colleagues would use for evaluation. I felt valued when I could ask members in the department to help me with issues that I was responsible for and I too would assist them.
The support from the team I was a part of was evident from the start. The best answer I can give is regarding guidance. GE has a fantastic culture with continuous development as one of the pillars it stands upon. Honestly the role that I fulfilled was not one of my immediate career choices but the skills I have learned are priceless due to the vast range that are transferable across all functional areas. I was given guidance based upon what I wanted to get out of my placement and I was given the opportunity to pursue my personal career interests around site.
On a daily basis I would say I would have about 60% of the time doing my role with 40% of the time to pursue my own interests around the site. This would vary daily depending on how I planned my days and my attendance at meetings.
I was amazed at the responsibility given to me. In my first month at work I had the ability to credit customers and suppliers up to thousands of pounds based on my own and the rest of the teams decisions. GE is a very adaptive company to work for. Constantly implementing simplification measures and investment in efficiency, I found myself teaching fellow colleagues on how to use the new types of software. This gave me a huge confidence boost in my first few months.
The skill of being interpersonal has been the main skill that I have developed, this has been through networking with the majority of people I have had interaction with. I didn't receive that much training but it doesn't matter! You do alot of the training yourself through your own exposure to new situations and experiences. I was so surprised to see how much I learnt about myself.
The Company
Always a happy one. Everyone would help me whenever they could and it went a long way as i was the new guy in the office. I would say my manager was stern but fair with all of us,
Not very well set up as I joined a month later than planned. Part of the hiring process involved a background check from a third party employed by GE. When I eventually joined the team I was told that the third party processing background checks had been changed due to similar incidents with others just as I had experienced. There are a few events set up but I felt as though there was room for improvement.
I didn't initially find that I had been trained but I went on a software development course of which proven unnecessary due to the redundancies in my department but I know the course cost $995 and my manager at the time was happy for me to do it.

Extremely. All options for your future are communicated to you, upon completing a placement with GE I am sure that I would be in a better position to apply for a grad scheme with GE in the future with a placement with them under my belt already.
The Culture
During christmas parties and birthdays yes there was,
Much cheaper than what I was used to. I had a room in a student house where we all didn't know each other but we all got along very well. It was about a hundred pounds cheaper in Cardiff than what i was used to.
The nightlife in Cardiff is so underrated. If you are a student the whole city is yours! Cheao drinks at multiple venues all week with so many house events across the city. This has been the best place I have lived for nightlife. The majority of fellow clubbers are students and I have met many friends because of this.
Not initially but towards the end of my placement I was made more aware of the opportunities on offer.
