The Role
Working for Microsoft in London has been the highlight of my university experience. It's given me insight into what I want out of the remainder of university and for the start of my career 10/10.
Colleagues will not hesitate to present you with more responsibility if you show them that you're ready for it.
1-to-1 meetings can be frequent for any issues you may have, and managers will genuinely follow up on any extra training needs you require.
Usually the work load is quite steady. Pushing big dates such as releases of products it will intensify - but it is all manageable.
I was given Project Manager roles aside from my job title as a Data Analyst which increased my responsibilities quite a lot since it is so different. It was a lot to take in at the start but after a while it's quite easy going.
In terms of my degree, I feel as though the work I did at university is a lot easier to what I've had to handle here at Microsoft which is a huge boost. The technical skills that I didn't expect to pick up will be used directly in the role I want to go into after graduating.
The Company
Very laid back, but at the same time you're expected to deliver. The work is very fast paced but can often change priority very quickly, which takes the edge off of things.
There was no set structure to my role as the expected jobs I was given varied very quickly. But because of this it was very open and fair, meaning it was up to me to decide what I wanted to get out of my placement.
They've helped me develop a good grounding of skills that I'll take on to becoming a professional data analyst, and I'm very thankful for that. In order to do that I was thrown in at the deep end a lot since all the skills were very new.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
For my role, the options are slimmer as a data analyst. Currently there are no graduate roles for a data analyst but you're advised at the start of the internship to network just as hard as you work. So it's still possible to find a job through any connections you may obtain for yourself.
The Culture
Yes, we tend to go for drinks after work to nice locations in London especially. There's also lots of work parties. And free drinks in the office!
Very expensive. London interns especially will feel this one the most. I advise all potential (London) interns to take out a maintenance loan before beginning.
10/10 for London.
Yes, lots of events to increase your expertise in your field and meet new people from different companies/backgrounds who are all passionate about what they do.
