The Role
My internship with Microsoft was extremely enjoyable. Right from day one I was given a range of projects to get involved in and was given full responsibility. Most of the projects set were very challenging but I was completely supported throughout to ensure I'd make the most out of the year and build skills that would be useful in years to come.
Everyone in the office is very willing to help each other and leverage each other's work. As an intern you are given real responsibility with potential to have a really big impact. Additionally, I was never treated differently to a full time employee except that everyone was really willing to help me find my ground initially.
Throughout the year I had regular one to one's with my manager and was constantly asked whether I was being given the right opportunities to learn and develop. For a few of the projects I worked on I was also assigned a mentor who would help me get set up and answer any questions I might have.
My job was extremely up and down. On occasion I'd be coming in early and leaving late to get work done. However I was never given a huge work load to do last minute. There were a few weeks throughout the year that were a lot quieter, which gave me the opportunity to work on my personal development.
Right from the start I was given teams to manage and projects to run that had potential for a really big impact. A had very big responsibilities and as such was given the support needed to succeed as well as the leeway to run these projects as I saw fit.
The skills acquired will be extremely useful both in my degree and afterwards. I have greatly improved my organisational, presentation and technical skills and am a lot more confident in what I can achieve.
The Company
My particular department was pretty quiet but friendly. It was a really good environment for chats in smaller groups, however slightly less suited for team or department events out side of work hours.
