The Role
Varied, challenging work for the most part.
Really felt like an important member of the team from day 1.
Managers were both extremely supportive and great to work with, stretching my ability but providing insight and guidance when required.
Felt some days were much quieter than others, although down to myself for the most part I feel at some points I could have had more work.
Started off without much but towards the end of the placement had much more involvement in important matters
Key skills developed were :- - Coding - Communication - Confidence These skills will 100% be used and developed further in the future
The Company
Great group of people, very approachable and friendly so working with different people was no concern. Also the fun side of the office was great. Majority aged 21 - 30 so generally always up for doing things and getting everyone involved. Weekly football, team wide lunches, team organised events (pool tournaments, socials, etc.)
Very good for the most part, all our accesses to programs and servers worked within a few days. Detailed handover documents were provided to ensure the initial few weeks weren't too complicated, as well as training on the projects we'd be working on to get us up to speed. All specific requirements were catered for (e.g. new chairs, new monitors etc.)
We were made to feel like a valued member of the company so training and development focus was like any other permanent member of staff. Plenty of initial training to get us up to speed and every quarter development objectives were decided on depending on where I felt like I needed to improve. This allowed me work on skills I wanted to develop.
Subsidised Canteen
I did not want to continue working with them simply because I want to explore career options. Although prospects are relatively positive for the future and I would definitely try and come back at a later date. Many placement students have got a job with them for after university, LBG invests in its placement students so it tries to retain them when it can.
The Culture
Very good, everyone gets along with each other and is always up for doing things. Football every week, nights out, generally just hanging out and getting to know each other was very easy with lots of things being organised especially towards the beginning of the placement. This is more to do with the people on the placement rather than LBG putting activities on for us.
Great, living costs range from £60 per week to around £100 a week depending on whether you want to live in student areas or in professional flats. Going out isn't expensive but isn't too cheap either, plenty of places that you can go to do free activities and plenty of bars that aren't too pricey.
Great places to go throughout Leeds, lots of different clubs depending on what you want. We went to cheap bars every week and occasionally went to student nights. It helped that a lot of us were students in Leeds so knew the area and where to go but part of the fun is discovering new places. Although not the cheapest city you'll find.
Yes things like team nights out, team bonding sessions and activities were ran through the social committee. These were ran once a month and always needed people to help out in. Also I got involved with football through one of the managers that ran a Saturday league team, this meant I got to meet lots of new people and get to know the people from work that played much better.
