The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement year due to the amount of experience I've gained. I have been in two very experienced teams, where I've learnt a lot of new skills and grown hugely professionally. However, as my placement was at IBM Warwick, I haven't enjoyed the Warwick location as much as I would have London as it is very quiet with not a lot going on.
I have felt valued by my colleagues by getting nice feedback and an interest shown in what I want to get out of the year.
The support and guidance at IBM is second to none. In a year, I have not met an IBMer who isn't willing to help where they can. The support from the Foundation team and community was amazing and I always felt there was a wealth of guidance available as well as someone to call on. Every student has an Early Professionals Manager, and they are amazing, putting comfort and re-assurance to every query or worry.
Throughout the intern community this varied, but I was extremely busy on a daily basis. There was always something I could be doing, or needed to do. I enjoyed this, but at times the workload did get too much and it's important you address this at the time.
I was given a large amount of responsibility on my placement year with key business tasks. However, there was always people to help when needed and in IBM there are never any silly questions. I loved this about the internship, that you have a proper job and a real responsibility, you're not shadowing or getting the coffee, you're gaining real business experience which has been invaluable.
The training I've received about the technology industry has been amazing. I've learnt more in a year than I ever thought I could and developed a genuine interest in the area. I have also learnt at a top level how big business works, which will see me through my degree and future jobs. Throughout the year, the skills I've developed have been invaluable especially my communication and analytical skills.
The Company
The Warwick office is very quiet although very large. It is nice in the fact you know a lot of people and you have a good community going, but personally I prefer more people in an office environment.
The IBM internship is extremely well organised, something I can't fault at all. You have advanced warning before any significant event or hand in and the opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge are outstanding.
The firm really does invest in you. Whether that is paying for you to go to client meetings, receive additional education, or spending time and effort to go through things with you. In a year, I haven't been turned down once if I've asked for something which would enhance my experience and skills.
Flexi Time
Working from home
The Graduate process is very competitive with only the top 10% being fast tracked for interview and the next 25% being invited back for assessment centre.
The Culture
There is a good social scene, but I think there is more so in London as there is more placement students there.
The cost of living was around £325 a month and an average night out would cost you around £30.
In Leamington, there are a few nice bars and clubs but it is only a small town. However, Birmingham isn't far away at all.
There were some opportunities such as employees bbq, football games and charitable activities.
