The Role
Working at IBM has been a great experience. As a Resiliency Services Senior Leadership Assistant, I always was working on project where I could see tangible benefits. It was also always changing as the role was so diverse. Perhaps some slight more push and drive from managers would have been great as at times I felt slightly underutilized.
Working with my colleagues has been a great experience. Everyone is extremely friendly and personally interested in progressing your career. Only downside for my team was that we were spread very widely across the country so rarely saw everyone together in person.
When you want support and guidance, you are given it and there are always people more than willing to help you succeed. In addition, when I didn't want guidance and wanted the freedom to be creative and do things my own way, I was able to do so as well.
As my role was so project orientated it fluctated massively. At times, I would be working very heavily throughout the day and occasionally overtime, but at other times, would have far less on an perhaps feel underutilized.
You can take on as much responsibility as you want. There are always people and managers to speak to to help you progress your career, especially if you are able to produce good results with the work you provide.
An industrial placement in my opinion, is a necessity. This year has put me in fantastic stead for finishing my degree with practical knowledge as well as getting a graduate role either at IBM or any other firm as well.
The Company
IBM is a big firm - it is difficult to know everyone. But within teams, the atmosphere is extremely positive. Everyone is interested in helping everyone. It is very much a team effort of 50+ small companies working together, rather than 1 large company. In addition, IBM is very much a company that you will get out however much you put in. Get involved in things and things will come around back to you.
Very good. You are given both a task manager (your boss) and an EPM. Your EPM is in charge or your career and is there for any advice you want in helping to progress your career and give you the necessary experience you want. In addition, there are always a number of learning sessions available and communities (like blogs) to provide you with info about what is going on, what is coming up etc.
Again, the possibility of personal training and development is almost unlimited. These happen almost everyday and you simply need to opt in to become part of them. IBM is very much a company that you will get out however much you put in. Get involved in things and things will come around back to you. Only suggestion would be, as an intern, it can occasionally feel like you are the bottom of the pile (ie/limited perks), but I suppose this is true so can't really complain!

Working from home
As IBM acts more like 50+ small firms working together, the future prospects are great. It is very easy to move around between areas as well as see the progression of the firm as a whole as well.
