The Role
Working at General Electric is quite inconsistent at times its extremely interesting and rewarding and at some times the day may seem to drag on. But generally overall I do enjoy working for this company, and would recommend working here to any students looking to apply for a 12 month internship.
I was initially eased into the work I do once I joined but as my internship progressed I was given greater roles and responsibilites, I believe these responsibilities were not given blindly but felt supported and guided all the way through by management. Towards the end of my internship especially I was given support to close out some of the projects/ tasks I was working on.
I believe working for general electric has really helped to develop my skills in quite a few key areas such as using certain programs which are applied throughout my course. I believe having experienced the working life I am now focused and know what sector I want to work in and how hard I have to work to achieve that goal.
The Company
Generally the atmosphere of the office is good, at time people may "plug themselves in" and listen to music. The office is kept clean and regurlaly cleaned. At times during busy periods of the year the office is very lively but towards the end of my internship it died down a little.
I feel my internship was well planned out, they had a general list of tasks which needed to be done. But they firstly found out what modules I have done at uni and got my to apply what I have learnt at university to the tasks at hand. At times some tasks were unplanned and needed to be done immediately.
GE offers a large range of training and online tests which were compulsory to do/ attend. Whether thats training on how to deal with customers, ergonomics etc... I received training on a couple of different programs which I used through out my internship before I was set work to do.

The future employment prospects arent amazing but seem reasonable although I have not been offered a graduate job. I believe it would not be difficult to reapply for a graduate job or scheme. My internship has been successful but my manager only has the power to recommend me for a graduate scheme and not offer me one.
The Culture
I believe there is a good social scene amongst fellow placement students. We all go to the cinema together. Workout at the gym together and always try to organise nights out at each other universities. We have recently celebrated a GE day where we all chipped in and tried to help assist together
Compared to my home town and university, the cost of living and socialising in the area is quite reasonable. To get a nice reasonably sized room with bills included shouldn't cost more than £400 a month in rugby. Activities here aren't expensive and most things like restaurants offer a discount to GE employees.
I am based in Rugby and to be completely honest the Nightlife here is abysmal. There is one club which isnt very good. What is considered a good night for alot of people here is a night down to the pub with a good bit of karaoke. Which "isnt my cup of tea" but may be other peoples
The were quite a lot of opportunities and activities we interns can get involved with outside of work. Whether that's teaching kids STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or just going to an iMeche/ IET training/ lecture program there were always some sort of activity we could get involved in outside of work
