    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my placement. I made a lot of friends in Fradley while working in Logistics and developed skills i had not even realised i would need. Had the area that i was working in be better then I would have enjoyed the experience even more. Lichfield is a nice city but just a bit quiet for me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Most of my colleagues knew what work I was doing, appreciated it and tried to help me in whatever way the could which made the year a lot more enjoyable. What could have made it better was if my manager showed a little more interest and appreciation. Overall I did feel valued though.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My Supervisor supported me a lot, he gave me small tasks to being with talking me through them and then by the six month mark i had a lot more responsibility and i felt very confident in myself. My manager was not so supportive, he was always quite busy and so rarely supported or guided me. In fact, most of my interactions with my manager was him giving me some menial task simply for the fact that i was an undergraduate.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would have days where i am rushed off my feet then other days i would not have so much to do. There was always work to be getting on with and at the beginning I was busier because i was not as efficient. As the year progressed i began finishing my work sooner and sooner and would have benefited from the role developing with me a bit more.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This is a difficult question because I felt like I had a lot of responsibility for a student at the beginning of the year however by the end i feel like i could have done more. I definitely became more capable throughout the year and yet the jobs remained the same, although they were huge tasks to begin with, by the end they were somewhat easy

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills i have developed will definitely enable me to succeed in my final year of university and in future roles. The training i received was non-existent and i have mentioned that this is an area of improvement for future students. The year could have benefited from more structure and training.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was fairly relaxed in my office, everybody got a long and there was never any tension. Whenever someone was leaving we would all go out for a drink and whenever it was someone's birthday we would bring in a cake. I would say it was a pretty good atmosphere overall.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This was quite poor. I have highlighted this as something that needs to be improved for future students as the year lacked any kind of structure. I had one extremely brief informal appraisal a couple of months into the placement, no formal training (only on the job training), not one target set for the entire year.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • This was also a very poor area. I can understand how having a student for a year only means you will not want to heavily invest in them but i think it is a mistake to not invest in them at all. No training, no opportunity to learn new skills or take a course. Meanwhile some of my friends on placement had a day off or two for training every week.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would consider a job with Faurecia as a last resort. The people are great at my plant but the company as a whole is not my kind of company. Plus the pay is not very good.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We occasionally went out for a drink but many of them had boyfriends/girlfriends or they lived far away and so it was not very often that we did anything outside of work. We got on very well though and i joined the gym with a couple of them and we would meet in the canteen for coffee.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Accomodation is not too bad however it is about £4 a pint which is too much when you are used to Northern/Student Union prices

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was two good places in Lichfield, one closed at 2 so everybody went to the other place which was open until about 4. The second place is basically a rubbish pub. There are a couple of decent pubs though, some have pool tables, there's a cool little micro pub called the "Whippet Inn" which serves real ale

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • None
