    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working for Vauxhall is a great opportunity that I will treasure. Going into a placement can be a daunting prospect but with around 100 other undergraduates at Vauxhall, it makes the whole experience far more reassuring. It is somewhat like a big family where you can build close relationships for life.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • It’s been a bumpy placement ride full of many different challenges. One thing is for sure, Vauxhall do not shy away from giving undergraduates real responsibility straight from the off! This really makes you feel wanted and makes you feel a part of the team. It is particularly satisfying when other colleagues come to you for your advice and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout my placement I was given a great amount of guidance and support. My manager was constantly on hand to not only support with work matters but also my professional development as an individual. This included setting goals and monitoring my progress throughout. We were also given personal mentors to help guide us during the year.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • One of the great things about Vauxhall is that no day is the same. Every day you are taking on new responsibility and learning new things. If you ever run out of work, all you have to do is ask! Vauxhall really value you as a member of the team and will do all they can to get you involved with real project work straight from the beginning of the placement.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a great deal of responsibility, even early on. If you perform well, the level of responsibility will only increase. Vauxhall are very good at rewarding their employees for working hard. I feel I have had as much responsibility as possible that will still allow project goals to be met effectively.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although some of the skills I have developed may not be relevant to my final year studies, they will certainly be useful in my future career. As well as developing specific technical skills, I also developed many transferable skills which will definitely assist me throughout the rest of my studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office had a very good, calm and collective atmosphere. Team work is especially important at Vauxhall. Whether it was on a professional level or simply stopping in the corridor for a chat, I felt like I could approach any member of the office while at work. This made work feel more of a home than anything.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work placement was extremely organised. Living at home, it was very easy for me to get to work. However, Vauxhall make sure that all undergraduates have somewhere to live and are fully integrated into the local area. We are offered many presentations, tours and training workshops throughout the placement year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Vauxhall spend a great deal of time developing us. From setting goals, to presenting presentations, they make sure that we push ourselves throughout. Throughout the placement, it really felt like Vauxhall were interested and engaged with what I was trying to achieve. I believe it is very much a two way process, one which both parties can benefit from.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be more than happy to go back to Vauxhall as a graduate if the opportunity ever presented itself. I have had a fantastic year and built some close relationships. I believe Vauxhall reward their employees well and this is something I really appreciate. As a big company, it is also a company I would be more than proud to represent.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to the amount of placement students that Vauxhall employee, there is never a dull moment. There are also events going on. This isn’t just with the undergraduates either as departments are always planning different events as team building exercises. It is a lively environment with something always going on.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Vauxhall is located in a reasonably priced area. With the wage that Vauxhall offer, you will be more than capable to support yourself while still saving for university.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life is fairly good. Being based in luton, there is also easy travel options to other surrounding areas, in particular London. The prices are reasonably cheap and as a big undergraduate community there is always something going on. It comes close to that all round university nightlife experience.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Vauxhall offer different activities, for example Yoga. They are also associated with the local gym which offers cheap membership and activities such as football.
