About You
The insight gave information on many areas of the large company and how various skills are utilised in the varying jobs which are available with Schlumberger. There was ample opportunity to ask questions and become better informed about a generally not very well known company even though they are big players in their field.
Schlumberger made us feel very welcome during this experience. They paid for all of our expenses and made sure the days were well organised with plenty of time allowed for each activity. At evening meals many of the staff members attended which helped to make us feel included and give us ample opportunity to get to know people, who were all very friendly.
The activities did not need much guidance or support as they were mostly talks and being shown around. However when we did undertake an activity they supplied support as well as making sure that they were not able to take away the aspect of thinking for ourselves and making sure that the work was ours.
I gained some skill as to allocation of time and money in a industry environment which should help me when I come to working. I also gained information into the company and the placements they offer which I might use to further my insight into jobs that are available at Schlumberger.
The Company
The insight was very well structured with an itinerary given to us upon our arrival and the correct amount of time allocated to the different activities which were well thought out and built on one another to create a well rounded experience. It did not feel rushed or dragged out.
The atmosphere was very friendly with a few activities put on more for the socialising aspect than for insight. It was lovely to be able to play games as icebreakers so that we could become reasonably friendly with the other people on the programme for we would do group tasks and spend quite a lot of time with one another over the few days.
There was not really much training involved, although this event was clearly for recruitment so they wanted to make a good impression. They gave us lots of information about the company and invested money in the expenses for the time we were there which would have amounted to a reasonable amount of money.
The programme was very good at giving an idea as to what it would be like to word for Schlumberger as we got to talk to lots of people who worked in various roles at the company about what their experiences were and we were given ever opportunity to ask questions about their experiences.
I cannot say that from this I know the company values but I do understand a little of what they look for in employees.
It helped me to see what sort of jobs are on offer and what a wide range of opportunities are out there in just one company. I would not say it particularly made me decide what I want to do as a future career as I believe my studies and what I enjoy there will be more of a factor in that.
Everything Else
All expenses were reimbursed with receipt submission and a form filled out. All costs whilst we were there were covered by the company, this included taxi travel and lots of food.
There were many opportunities to meet employees as they were present during all of the activities. Various different staff members attended all the meals and made sure to be dispersed around the tables. There were opportunities to ask questions and receive answers with almost all the staff we met which meant a great insight could be achieved.
The evening meals were the only social events.
This was vaguely touched on but not in great detail. This was mainly only as a mention in conversation with staff members.
I would say this is a good insight into the company which most people wouldn't know anything about. I think it was a worthwhile experience and I would recommend it to a friend. It seems like a good company to do placements with as they are able to offer a variety of lengths of placement and in various different areas. I would say this programme was good to bring attention to these advantages.
