The Role
I enjoyed the experience a lot as I was able to learn many different values and ideologies of worldwide firms. Further to this I understood the process of recruitment and gained a great understanding of the Financial Services industry.
During my placement I felt very valued by my colleagues and have been given multiple awards to show their gratitude. Awards have been given for performance amongst my fellow interns and also within my Financial Technology department.
I was given a lot support whilst on placement especially during the first month as this was the crucial learning stage during my 12 month. Also, I sit next to my manager on a day to day basis which allows me to frequently raise any issues or queries I have.
My daily activity varies from day to day due to the job demand at the time. For example one day I may have three jobs to work and those days to require extra output and effort; however, recruitment is a meritocratic industry and thus the more effort you put in, even on your quiet days, results in long term success.
During my twelve months I have been given huge amounts of responsibility. Duties ranging from identifying candidates to meeting clients on a day to day basis. Whilst you do get a lot of great opportunities to take responsibility, Hays do not force it on you and let you learn the basic hardships of recruitment first in order stop yourself becoming overwhelmed.
In terms of knowledge gained I feel recruitment is right up there as you gain exposure not only to the recruitment industry but also to whichever market you are working in. For myself I have been able to gain huge amounts of experience in the financial services industry, specifically looking at Investment Banking. Moving forward, I feel after I graduate I have a much better chance of finding a suitable role due to my increased knowledge and network.
The Company
The general atmosphere is upbeat and lively as in this industry energy and enthusiasm drives results.
The placement year was well set up and each manager had a solid idea of the structure and schedule of there respective intern. This included a 3 month training plan initially with regular one on one contact time with your manager.
The course has multiple training days for interns to develop skills and commercial awareness which is a crucial part of becoming a successful recruiter.

The company has a great career progression structure which enables each individual to be in control of their own progression. Each consultant is given annual targets to hit which again pushes the meritocratic culture.
The Culture
There was a good social scene between interns, however due to the nature of the structure you rarely spend time with fellow interns during the day. There is a good social structure with colleagues however I do feel it is dependant on who you are put with.
The cost of living is much higher than anticipated, social costs are even higher as drinks can cost up to £10 for a double at a normal bar. In one bar I was charged £18 for a double which wasn't the best to see on the till. However, wages are generally much higher in London than the rest of the UK.
In the area I worked the night-life was okay but in London you are only 1 - 2 tube stops away from the best clubs in the capital.
There were a few opportunities such as a charity football event however there wasn't regular events to get involved in.
