The Role
I absolutely loved my internship year, I was able to personally develop myself in a variety of different areas. this will be invaluable to me in my future career and when continuing my studies. I was given real responsibility and was producing work for different levels of hierarchy within the organisation, my team and manager continually supported me and my development so I was able to improve throughout my time with Virgin Media
I felt really welcome within my team, everybody went out of their way to introduce themselves and help accommodate my learning. I believe my team really valued my contributions, I was always thanked and received positive feedback when I'd completed work or projects. I felt as if I was equal with everyone in my team, I wasn't at any disadvantage purely because I was an Intern. I loved being part of the intern community too, it creates such a family like atmosphere as you are all going through the same process.
I was fully supported by my manager, I had weekly catch ups to check on progress and express any concerns. I was always made to feel comfortable expressing difficulties and questions, this made me feel confident as I wasn't being judged. My manager would always ask me what I found interesting and why try to link this into my work load, I am really thankful for that as I was working on projects that I had genuine interest in and therefore I believe my work was at a higher standard.
I was fairly busy on a daily basis, however I felt comfortable to ask for help or an ease of pressure if it was getting too much or work was over running. certain periods of the year the work slowed down, and other times it was much busier. I felt comfortable to adjust to this and if this required me to stay late/work through lunch I felt happy doing that. I felt happy to work through busy times as I knew I'd be rewarded when times we're less busy to equal good work/life balance.
The level of responsibility gradually increased throughout my placement, it also increased when I expressed my interest in an area and I was given the opportunity to investigate. I really appreciated this because I wasn't thrown completely in the deep end automatically but I was gently pushed to continually improve and take on greater levels of responsibility. I liked how Virgin Media we're happy to give me responsibility when I requested it, it made me feel trusted and able to complete the work.
I feel really confident going into my final year of university, I've gained invaluable skills and abilities since joining VM last summer. I'll be using these skills on my return to university and in the search for a graduate scheme, I feel happy and able to do this due to the training and work I've completed over the course of this year.
The Company
I worked within Head Office so it was usually fairly busy and something was always happening, Virgin always had fun activities planned throughout the year and it really boosted employee morale (charity days/voice days/zoom days). the atmosphere was fairly relaxed, I felt no pressure to look or speak a certain way and felt confident in approaching and talking to people.
My placement was really well organised, my manager had a list of things I would be completing within that quarter. I always knew what was next on the agenda and felt as if I was able to give advice on what would be useful for me to partake in.
I was able to attend intern events once every quarter, these always had a focus of development and gave me the chance to reflect on performance. I was always offered help by different professionals when I was struggling with work and this helped my personal development as I was able to enhance skills. I was encouraged to take part in online courses, both externally and on ignite to benefit my knowledge and understanding on Virgin Media and my job role specifically

I believe Virgin Media to be really appealing to work for, so much so I've extended my contract with them so I'll be staying on until September when I'll have to leave for my final year studies. I've also expressed my interest in their graduate program and I hope to return on this scheme once I've graduated to continue my career.
The Culture
Yes! starting with 20+ new interns created a big friendship group, we were all in the same boat and sharing experiences. We always had social activities planned, regularly went on nights out/dinners and would lunch together at work to catch up.
My family home is based close to the hook office so I was luckily able to live from home and commute into work with purely the expense of petrol. This was easily affordable on the wage I was receiving. The area was relatively inexpensive, I was able to attend dinners/nights out easily with no real financial strains.
I was based in Hook so we regularly drifted further afield to Reading when we we're going out, this was close and easy to get too. It was also made easier by a group of interns renting houses in reading so always had a easy place to meet and sleep.
Virgin did offer many activities out side of a work environment, multiple bike rides, charity events, LBGT rallies, Festivals, running clubs, 5 a side tournaments
