The Role
3M is a fantastic company to work for, I really enjoyed my whole year.
3M stands out as it immediately treats every placement student as a valued member of the team. From the start I was given my own responsibilities and many opportunities to develop.
I had a more laid back manager than others. This suited me but I felt comfortable that if necessary I could ask for more guidance.
My work flow varied, some days were quieter so I had a chance to focus on personal projects and development. Other times were a lot busier especially in the lead up to events etc.
From the word go I was given my own responsibilities, I was of course given guidance at first but the decisions we ultimately mine to make. This was great as it made me feel like I was really adding value to the team.
The skills I have learnt here are absolutely invaluable and I am now 100% more confident in myself and my skill set. Placement students are also offered a whole host of training programmes and development programmes to help us learn more skills.
The Company
The office is open which allows for cross communication between teams which is a real benefit. Additionally there is a real feel of mutual appreciation and there is no issues with status, the people with higher grade job roles and treated in exactly the same way as placement students.
Overall I would say that the placement scheme here ran seamlessly. It was extremely well organised and this made the whole year a lot more enjoyable.
There is a wealth of training programmes available to placement students and specific sessions set out for placement students focussing on personal development.

For me the only thing that puts me off returning here is the location as I live nearer London. However, I would not be unhappy to come back and work here. Employees are treated fantastically and there are so many opportunities within 3M.
The Culture
Yes! 3M itself sets up many social event from the Christmas Party to and outdoor cinema and a quiz night. There are also specific events set up for placement students when the first start to help us all get to know each other.
I lived in a student area in Reading so the cost of living for me was about the same as it was when I was a student.
We have Central Reading just along the road and the nightlife there is great!
Yes, a few variations of sports clubs like football, touch rugby and netball and also a reading club.
