The Role
I really enjoyed my placement, learnt lots about business and just how large corporate organisations work.
I had a very close team, got on well with peers, managers and beyond. There was a good team spirit and there was always support there if you needed it. My team was very social and would be out for drinks most weeks if you fancied joining.
I was provided with a good amount of training initially before working in the office, once there there was an element of being thrown in the deep end, however I think this is a good way to learn and often managers simply don't have the time to provide guidance 24/7. I have learnt a huge amount whilst at KPMG and I attribute this to
During busy periods hours were very long and there was lots of work to get through but in quieter times, standard working hours applied. However, I think there is an expectation in the office to not be working your strict working hours at all times. Director's in my team often encouraged me to leave at a reasonable time and asked why I was staying late if so. All in all a good balance I would say, however I think is very specific to the team and function you are working in so it's not applicable across the company.
I was given lots of responsibility - contacting clients, delegating and managing my own workload from day 1. The more I demonstrated my own skills, I feel the responsibility increased. Sometimes daunting how much responsibility I did have but again I think it is a good way to learn.
The placement has already secured me a place on the graduate scheme with KPMG and I will continue to work there. The level of training I have already received has been invaluable and I expect will be very useful throughout my career.
The Company
Everyone very hardworking and generally focussed on their work most of the time. I found it quite difficult to get chatting to the wider team at first, however people did make lots of effort and following a few Friday night drinks and team building events I feel I know most people on my floor and that makes work a lot more enjoyable.
It was the first time my placement had been run at KPMG but very good set up in terms of training and lots of support throughout. Perhaps some more organisation of the opportunities after the placement had finished would be useful as this was unclear for quite a long period of time. But since discussing, leadership have been very accommodating in what placement students would like to do in the future and where they would like to take their careers,
Huge investment of time into placement students and so many opportunities to get involved in long term career and personal development programmes. As an individual it is important to volunteer yourself and get involved with as much as possible to make sure you are benefitting from such things as they are not compulsory.
