The Role
Overall this was an excellent internship and I thouroughly enjoyed the experience
Everyone was really friendly and I felt the work I was doing was truly appreciated by the people that gave it me. You also have a chance to spend time with them outside of office hours, where you get to know everyone much better/
Although only rated 7, that doesn't mean I think it was bad. The supervisors gave me enough information to get started, however they wanted me to learn as much as possible so they made sure they didn't spoonfeed me.
I think there was one day in the six weeks where I struggled to find something to do, but overall there was the perfect balance of work - enough to keep me busy and get a breadth of knowledge, but not so much that it overwhelmed me
I was given a variety of projects that was solely my responsibilty. For the first 3 weeks I worked on a document for the company that directly immpacted on one of there software packages. Personally I did not interact with any client work, but I know many interns that did.
I greatly improved my excel skiils (I thought I was good at excel until the internship!) which will be very helpful for the future (however not necessarily degree level. Do to the nature of the profession it is hard to learn actuarial skills in the six weeks (as the graduates take exams in them) which would apply to university, however it has given me an insight to the types of degree modules I should be taking next year
The Company
Everyone is easily approachable, and talking does occur in the office. However it can be relatively quiet (to allow for work) and each desk has low walls which, although making it much easier to concentrate, can make the atmosphere a bit quieter. However there are often cakes and foodstuffs brought in!
Overall it was excellently set up, there wasn't much waiting time with regards to the assessment stages, and throughout the six weeks I felt that the whole placement was well organised
We had three induction days (one at the start, middle and end) to keep track of how things were going, and to put you at ease - especially on the first day. The RCS team had a further training day on the first Tuesday to help us get to grips with specifics. Everytime we underwent a new project, the project supervisor took time out to check what we were doing.
The Culture
We often went out for drinks events, and meals
It was very expensive! However that's London for you, I was staying in student halls in Central London which proved very expensive. However TW offered to subsidise accommodation expensive. Also there were sprisingly (relatively) cheap places to get hot lunch
Any Nightlife you like is available in London!
The amount of opportunities were amazing. There were many drinks evenings, including celebrating the exam drinks (many of these involved in us getting free drinks from colleagues!). I also played cricket, went to Zoo lates, and compete in the Corporate Games - something which was a personal highlight
