The Role
I enjoyed my work placement there was a few times when there was lack of motivation to go into work the 8-4.30 slog but for the most part the experience was good and it has changed my outlook on where I want to progress in the industry it however was not what I expected it to be .
the first question asked of me was "who do you support" and the response of "Newcastle" wasn't the best answer to give in an office full of Sunderland supporters especially after the past year. But I feel as if they have appreciated me and helped support and develop me into a better engineer and a better person so it makes up for them all supporting the wrong team.
I was given ample support throughout the year to develop myself and skills and I feel as if I am extremely competent in my role as I prepare to venture back into University life and a further working career. I hope to take the best qualities from all the people I have worked with to improve my work ethic and working life.
my schedule varied weekly. some times I would have nothing much on but others I would be assisting the Quality and Process engineer with their roles my general working year was busy to begin with and then slowed down at Christmas and picked back up in late year as I had a higher work load working on my own projects.
I was steadily built up throughout the year to gain more responsibility. towards the end of the year I was managing my own projects and working with other members of staff independently from the team I worked with.
the module related to quality in my degree was 4 weeks long so I have found out more than I did then but I think the most important thing I learnt was the general practices of the factory and manufacturing lifestyle. I don't think it will help with my degree but it is extremely helpful in applying for jobs
The Company
the atmosphere was good it took a while to get used to as the next youngest person in the office is 20 years older than me so there was no one who generally had the same interests as me. however there was never a dull moment and everyone got on. I would happily work with every member of staff in my office
the work placement was generally come in, work make sure your doing ok, review it, review with university tutor, repeat again then finish. the highlight of it however was meeting the other students from other plants at the beginning of the year and then talking to them again at the end of the year.
I have had a few little bits of training but it has generally been training that seems more appropriate for company procedures like ethics
I would work for Faurecia again however if it was the same role I have been doing I would not apply again. I think you have to go in with the mentality that it is a prolonged work experience you are getting trained up for most of the year for different jobs to then perform them in the back half of the year. I would however happily do a role like any of the other members of staff in the office .
The Culture
I get on well with everyone on the shop floor as I have my lunch with them and the rest of my department I felt that it has given me more of an insight into the way the factory works however outside of work I haven't done much. I go to the gym with another student and all the students we have a group chat to keep in touch outside of work hours .
I live local so the cost of living wasn't that bad for me although the cost in petrol for driving my car went up but a full tank would often last me the month if it was just for local travel and work
there is always an event on during the week like Digi Mondays that generally are cheap and you can go out for under a £15
