The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the Summer Scheme. The Savills employees which I encountered were welcoming and extremely helpful as well as informative. I learned a great deal about being a rural surveyor as well as Savills itself, understanding their ethics and values.
As stated above I was made to feel like a part of every team which I was in over the four weeks. I was taken on many site visits as well as given tasks which held some responsibility. This made me feel like I was actually contributing to the work which my team does, it also made me feel like my team felt I was trustworthy enough to perform such tasks. All of these aspects just accentuated my feeling of being a part of my team.
Everything was explained to me in full detail, no one expected me to know things which I wouldn't know at the stage I am at in my education, this meant that every thing was explained to me and if it was not, then when I asked they were more than happy to tell me.
There was never a time when I had nothing to do. I was taken on site visits on an average of twice a day, vastly broadening my experience of a rural Savills office. When I was not on a site visit I was given tasks which helped my team. These tasks were always things within my capability range however were nearly always something new which helped me understand what it was that is done in the office. It also helped to have the Handover File Project as this could be done in the little time between tasks.
As I have already stated above, there were quite a few tasks which I was given that held responsibility. These ranged from figuring out the right information about electrical inspection surveys and whether it is satisfactory or unsatisfactory. I was also given the responsibility of greeting some potential tenants coming to look at a farm viewing day, this gave me quite a bit of experience with how to talk to clients.
The skills which I have gained from this scheme will help me through the degree as I have picked up quite a lot of things which have helped my understanding of rural surveying. However the skills I have gained will help me more after I have completed my degree and have a graduate job because I have learned a great deal about office life as well as how to interact with clients and tenants.
The Company
There was a very friendly and positive atmosphere in the office every day. Everyone was always pleased to see me and were always more than happy to take me out for a site visit.
It was very well organised. I was told at the start of every week what was planned for me as well as who I would be working with and going out with. This made me feel like my week was very structured and that it had been planned for me specifically.
There were many departmental talks which were given made accessible to all of the scheme, these talks were extremely interesting and very informative especially the one on the APC.
There a many future employment prospects which Savills have which are appealing to me. Savills have done a great job at showing the best aspects of their company and have made sure that their prospective graduates feel well informed.
The Culture
I had no fellow placement students.
Petworth was quite expensive as it is a small town with great historical value, however it was a lovely place to work.
I did not partake in any nightlife activity.
There was not a huge amount but there was a lunch and casual after work drinks which I was invited to which was very friendly.
