About You
The vacation scheme at Taylor Wessing was honestly very enjoyable since the main focus of the scheme was allowing you to see what working there would genuinely be like. Not only was the quality of the work fantastic with endless opportunities to speak to anyone within the firm, there was also a strong commitment to the social and networking side of the firm.
Although it obviously depended on the type of work the department were currently taking on, the associates and trainees were more than willing to let you help them with their tasks or simply talk you through what they were doing. This meant that you really felt like you were both actually contributing to their work and that they cared about making sure your time there was the most beneficial it could be.
The amount of support on the scheme was exceptional. We were contacted several times before the start of the scheme and given the opportunity to meet some of the other vacation schemers before beginning. During the scheme you were assigned both a trainee buddy and a supervisor, both of which were very understanding of any questions you had and of your relative knowledge of the legal profession.
As a non-law student the scheme did not assist me in my degree studies but has definitely helped me develop my skills for entering the working world. It gave you an insight into how to manage your time and how to approach large amounts of work in an unfamiliar and testing environment. The enthusiasm from those already working there is very encouraging and allows you to see the benefits of working as a team.
The Company
The scheme could not have had a better structure. Not only was there ample time to get to know your department and really get stuck into the work, but there were also numerous talks on other departments meaning that you got a taster for the firm as a whole. The structure of the scheme was also set out right at the beginning, meaning it was easy to communicate your workload to your supervisors.
The scheme generally had a very friendly atmosphere. While it would have been easy for it to feel like a constant competition and assessment, this was quickly forgotten. It was therefore easy to build relationships with the other vacation schemers and the trainees and associates in the departments. Taylor Wessing prides itself on its culture and this was really felt during my time there.
The firm made sure that we had multiple appraisals with our supervisors which meant that could get direct feedback on how to improve for the coming week and the future. This showed that they were really willing to invest time and energy into making sure you reached your full potential.
Although it was difficult to grasp exactly what the partners were doing on a day to day basis without the relevant legal knowledge it was very insightful about the opportunities for trainees. This was also helped by the fact that everyone was very willing to talk to you about exactly what they do.
Even in the short amount of time there, I had the opportunity to get involved with multiple social events with my department separate to the vacation scheme which really showed the genuine culture of the firm. A good work life balance is definitely something that is valued at the firm.
Due to the fact that is was so enjoyable and the continuous positive and energetic attitude of the trainees it is clear that the work you see taking place is an accurate picture of the reality. For that reason, it has really encouraged me into knowing that this is the right future career for me.
Everything Else
I was paid enough to cover my time living in London while on the scheme.
Almost every day there was a networking opportunity with a variety of fee-earners in the firm. This ranged from after work social events with the trainees to networking lunches with the partners. The were also daily talks from other departments meaning that you got the opportunity to broaden your understanding.

Yes, there were plenty of activities outside of work that the employees got involved with and some of these were even open to vacation scheme students. These included a pub crawl, a football team, a choir and various networking events for the trainees. This encouraged strong relationships to develop and positive attitudes to the work place.
Definitely.
