About You
This was a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of what differentiates Taylor Wessing from its competitors. That the important differences and key features of a career at TW were communicated in interesting, engaging, and accessible ways made this a great placement. People at the firm were very enthusiastic to answer any questions I might have and were very good at ensuring I was as involved in as much as possible.
As a non-law student I had worried about what I would be able to add to the firm but I found the placement really accessible and engaging. There were a variety of exercises and tasks in which I was able to make what seemed a meaningful contribution. My supervisors offered great feedback and were always looking to offer follow-up tasks when I had completed work for them.
At the end of each week I had an appraisal with my supervisor where I received very valuable feedback on my work and advice for the following week. This was coupled with many informal chats throughout my placement giving feedback on individual tasks as well as answering any questions I might have. This was a very busy time for the firm but everyone made an effort to be as helpful and supportive as possible.
The information this scheme provided on the firm, and the legal industry more broadly, will be of great assistance when choosing where I want to train. That the scheme provided some very useful insights into different departments within the firm will also be very helpful when I come to decide on what kind of law I wish to pursue further.
The Company
The vacation scheme was very well structured. Throughout the scheme we were offered a variety of informative talks and many opportunities to get involved in work ourselves. This mix ensured we were able to learn a lot more about the company whilst still having the chance to participate in engaging tasks. There were some great social events which provided further opportunities to learn about the firm and socialise with the other vacation scheme students.
The atmosphere during my insight was incredibly positive. At all times I was made to feel a welcome addition to the firm, with people from all levels looking to get me involved and answer any questions I might have. The other vacation scheme students on my insight were incredibly friendly and this only added to my great experience at the firm.
This was a very busy time for people at the firm so for my supervisor and buddy to spend so much time providing me with interesting work and feedback was great, As a group we were given lots of training and I was always able to ask for extra assistance when needed.
The regular interaction with trainees provided a detailed and realistic image of what it is like to work at the firm. When provided with work, it was always explained to my tasks would relate to a full time position at TW. We were provided with a realistic picture of the workload and time management skills required to work in a city law firm, and this is something I found very valuable.
Everyone at the firm was very happy to answer questions as to what made the firm's culture different to that of its competitors. The insight also contained a values themed lunch where we were able to ask partners questions related to the firm's values. This was a great way to interact with people at the top of the firm and to find out more about TW's unique culture.
This placement provided a great insight into what it is like to work in a forward thinking city law firm. The work I was provided with was interesting and engaging, and gave me a better idea of the type of law I would like to pursue in the future. The people at TW were always happy to answer my questions and these have further helped inform my future decisions.
Everything Else
The pay was very similar to that of similar sized competitors.
All social events were well attended by people from within the firm. These events provided a great opportunity to network in a more informal setting and to meet people from other departments. We were also able to arrange informal conversations over coffee at the office to find out more about departments we were not sat in.

There was a lot of information provided as to the pro bono opportunities for TW employees to get involved in. There was also the option to attend a law clinic regularly staffed by people from the firm to provide free legal advice. As well as this, we were given information as to a number of firm sports teams.
I would recommend this insight to anyone interested in finding out more about this forward thinking law firm. Many firms claim to be different, but it only after experiencing TW first hand that you realise just how unique this firm is. Anyone who takes part in this scheme will be provided with engaging work and a huge amount of support from great supervisors and buddies.
