The Role
Really good placement, I had lots of work and was given the independence to do things by myself as well as getting enough support
They treated me as a member of staff rather than a student. By the end of the placement I was helping some of the workers with different experiments
The placement supervisor was there for me 24/7, she is amazing
Depending on how my experiment ran, some days I would be in the lab for most of my time and others I could be in the office sorting out all of my write ups. But on the whole there is a good balance
I was given a lot of responsibility. My job was to create an assay to go into HTS which had a strict deadline. I was trusted to do this according to my own planning (with help if I needed it).
I have gained skills in so many areas from cell culture, biochemical assay development and even x-ray crystallography. I have learned so much I don't know how I would have achieved all of these skills (and knowledge) without this year
The Company
Everyone was lovely, You cold talk to everyone but it was also quiet enough that you can actually get work done!
Really well set up. I has a 'main' assay I had to develop and they set up some back up assays for me for when I had finished with my main one
The company has sent me on an enzymology training course, and all you need to do is ask if you want experience in a certain area. I asked for experience in crystallography and they let me join that team for as long as I wanted
Flexi Time
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
If you get on well with everyone and 'gel' well with them, there is no reason they won't consider you for a future job or a PhD
The Culture
Both the staff and the students are up for a good time. I have been to the pub with members of my team and have been to BBQs with another student's supervisor
The house prices are ok (if yo can get a furnished one!) but a lot of other things are quite expensive
During uni term times it is good, but when uni breaks up for the summer it dies down a bit
There is definitely opportunities, but we lived quite far from town so it was hard to get to them
