About You
I really enjoyed the scheme, it allowed me to gain a real insight into corporate law at a top global law firm, but also had some great socials.
I felt really valued because I was given various tasks to complete independently, including drafting summaries of agreements for a client, which meant that I had a lot of responsibility.
The support system in place was very helpful - we had a trainee buddy to ask general questions to and a supervisor who would assign tasks and also answer any specific questions/ questions about the department. Our supervisors were always close/ shared the office with us, so this means you never feel alone!
My research skills have been enhanced as well as my sense of self-reliance and independence as I was given responsibility to complete my own tasks to a strict deadline. This will invariably be useful for my degree and future life. My ability to network and build relationships has also improved as during the two weeks, I had the opportunity to meet many other employees of various stages in their career from various backgrounds.
The Company
Well structured - one trainer for each week, from a different department.
It was not excessively competitive and felt as though we were in a real collaborative environment, where we worked together on projects such as the client pitch exercise (where we presented at the end of the week).
They really invested a lot of time in helping us understand how the firm works, for example the practice area fair where we were able to see what employees from various departments get involved with on a day to day basis.
I was able to gain a real insight into it as two weeks at a firm as an employee helps you understand the working culture and environment. Perhaps it is not as reflective of the working hours of actual A&O employees but there is only so much pressure possible at a vac scheme!
Being immersed into the firm by sitting in various departments helps you see that the firm is truly approachable and friendly. However, there is variation between departments (e.g the formality, working practices) mean many of us will have had different experiences!
Ultimately this was invaluable experience in making me confirm my choice to pursue corporate law, and this also helped me realise which departments especially appealed to me.
Everything Else
As travel is expensive, it may be helpful to be reimbursed for this as well.
I was able to attend various events such as a client event, and also a dinner at the Connaught with the firm's partners, as well as other more informal opportunities across the department.
They were excellent - a social at Bounce to integrate us as vac schemers (and with the buddies) and the partner dinner/ Dirty Martini was a great bonding experience! There were also various opportunities during the days for example the rooftop barbecue.
Yes, we were given the opportunity to learn about the pro bono hours that a significant proportion of A&O employees get involved with, as well as go to the 'Brokerage City Link' session ourselves.
Most definitely - a great insight into the firm and corporate law in the City! All in all a really enjoyable two weeks.
