The Role
Going into this internship I hoped to gain as wide a knowledge/experience as possible on the advisory side of Real Estate. Although I was placed into one specific team, I was able to achieve my goal through the all intern-wide meetings/presentations that HR organized for us as well as one on one meetings that my 'buddy' helped organize with grads in other departments. We had about three or four intern wide meetings a week, which ranged from introductions to differing business lines, to a site visit to a major London landmark. In all, my internship at JLL exceeded all expectations and I cannot imagine how it realistically could have been better.
I did not feel like a burden on my colleagues at JLL. From the get go I was welcomed by my team, even those that were more senior who you would normally assume would not take notice of an intern. JLL also made an effort to make sure that the interns got to know each other by organizing a social event on our first day and bringing us all together at various other points throughout the internship.
I found that a combination of the other interns, my buddy and my line-manager meant that I always had access to the necessary support/guidance I needed to complete a task ect. The buddies acted as the perfect intermediary between us and those in more senior positions. I always felt comfortable going to my buddy to ask a question or gain clarification on a task that I had been assigned to do.
On a daily basis I would attend meetings with my buddy/other colleagues, go to the intern wide meetings, have coffee chats with grads in other areas of the company and do work given to me by my team. I was never given busy work, I found that the work I was assigned was useful/helpful to my colleagues. At the same time there were no fixed deadlines as the nature of my work was mostly long term analysis projects, so I never felt pressured to produce work that I felt was not finished. In all, there was never a single moment over the course of the internship when I felt neither board, nor overwhelmed.
I was given fairly a lot of responsibility: I was allowed to join meetings and the work I produced was sent on to other colleagues in the company.
The exposure I received in the advisory side of Real Estate has significantly helped my personal understanding of the Real Estate industry as a whole, and has allowed me to determine more accurately which aspect of RE I would like to start my career in.
The Company
The atmosphere was relaxed, I never felt as if I were being watched/monitored.
The internship was very well organized.
We were given some training, but mostly they were investing their time. As the internship was only a month long there less skill development training.
yes
The Culture
Yes
It was in the West End so I was expensive- but all of central London is expensive so that is to be expected
I didn't go out in the area that I worked in
Many, but with only a month there wasn't a lot of time to get involved
