    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The overall depth and quality of experience was rich. Going into the placement I expected to be given minimal responsibility given the fact I had no previous relevant experience in my role, I was wrong about this. Within the first couple of months I was entrusted with responsibilities you simply wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. I found myself in meeting rooms with quite senior members of the organisation where I was given the opportunity to bring my ideas and thoughts to the table. In addition, i was allowed the autonomy and flexibility to bring new ideas to the table and really get involved with the long term strategic direction of the business working with key members across Europe. I was also able to show creativity in supporting in the redesign of the social media platforms and get involved with improving the overall employer brand. As with everything, there were days where I felt overwhelmed but my team would stop at nothing to support and accommodate for my needs. I could go on and on about the positives about working at Sony, it is the single most significant experience I've had towards developing my professional career.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • This was the best part of my job. I was accepted as part of the team and was integrated into the decision making and idea generation processes of my department. I made genuine friendships out of this experience and have kept in touch with many after my departure. The environment was varied with people from all parts of the world and there was always someone there to cheer you up on your down days. I had close access to all the head of the departments and was able to chat and build relationships with them. A nice environment with nice people. (Also, every fortnight or so, colleagues come from other parts of the world and never come empty handed- there's always treats in the office).

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • leading on from my other comments, the experience was made what it was due to the support systems I had around me on a work and emotional level. Everyone was approachable and offered guidance but importantly gave you the autonomy to get on with it when you were comfortable.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always something to do. The thing is there was a day to day job but as a team we made efforts to dedicate time to where we wanted to be as a team. So there were many projects on improving employer branding, social media presence and just generally being pro-active in our approach. This was refreshing as it got us talking and working as a team to be as effective as we can.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As mentioned before, i was given a lot of responsibility. At first I actually felt as if i was out of my comfort zone, doing things i didn't really expect to be entrusted with. I had fortnightly meetings with my manager to track my progress and it was nice as she focused on where the team was going and what I wanted out of the experience and whether I was being exposed to tasks or parts of the business I was interested in. I responsibility is what you're after , you might even get more than you bargained for at Sony!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • From a strategic stand point this experience was everything in contextualizing the theory I have learned throughout my degree. It was interesting to see a matrix, multinational company working around you and being a fully functioning member within this very large family. So from a business perspective,I developed understanding of how strategy is harmonsied from central to local divisions and the challenges of keeping flows of communication healthy. More so, it gave me a real appreciation for working within a diverse team on a remote basis. I have learnt a great deal in this experience and I am grateful for all the support and opportunity given to be by Sony.

  • Vibrant, Diverse, Casual, Fun, Open

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well, we had great opportunities to visit sister companies, Pinewood Studios was a stand out event where we got to act out and direct video footage. We also had quarterly catch up sessions to ensure everyone was reflecting on their experiences at key milestones as well as bring interns together as they were placed in varied parts of the business. Overall, it was very well organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • training was accessible and external people often came in to hold training sessions. It's as simple as subscribing and booking a training event in a topic of interest, tuning in and interactively taking part in the training session. I personally signed up to a few over the course of the year and drew many positives from them. Particularly the training session on "Self-Awareness" was useful and I still apply the lessons from that session in my life today.

  • The recruitment team focus on succession planning for employees, they develop and train you and offer mentor-ship to align personal goals with organisational goals

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A tightly knit group, we often went out for drinks together and even when tipsy still got on and had a laugh!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were a few nice pubs within Weybridge, the train station offered easy and direct access into town when needed.
