About You
Overall the insight was enjoyable. Its very different to Uni & a good way to spend a month of your summer. The Canada Square Office is beautiful so its pretty difficult not to enjoy yourself when you're there. Wouldn't say the work is particularly fun- but the social scene and office atmosphere is enjoyable. Social scene with other interns also is an enjoyable aspect.
I did feel valued by my team whilst on the project. I took on tasks that they had previously done which gave them time to do other things. On all the work I completed I was given encouragement and feedback. As an intern I was invited out with the team whilst on client site & I do feel like members of the team made an effort to welcome me & make me feel involved.
During the internship you're given a buddy and you basically shadow them for the 4 weeks and work on the projects they are on. Most, if not all, of the support comes from your buddy & performance manager rather than the graduate recruitment team. I received constant guidance and support from my team and buddy in all aspects of the internship.
Did a lot of Microsoft Excel work which will be useful in my degree. I imagine the internship is pretty useful if you do end up working for KPMG after uni as it gives you contacts & a good insight to the jobs that you will be doing. Experience in the professional workplace is good & the final interview at the end is obviously very good interview practice.
The Company
My internship was well structured but I think that was due to the fact that my team buddy were on top of things & had a clear purpose for me being on the team. The grad recruitment team were not as well structured & not very accessible to get information from. It would have been nice to have some idea that I would be on client site rather than the main London office before starting for instance.
The atmosphere was nice. When you walk around the main office in Canary Wharf you can't help but enjoy it. The office is beautiful & never dull. There are a great number of interns around the place too which is nice, I tended to do all my work in 'break out' areas which are very chilled & have a nice atmosphere. The people are all welcoming & make time to speak to you- especially the new grads,
The firm invests in you because they pay you & put you straight onto client work. Its much more the case of learn on the job rather than learn using training days which is good seeing as the insight only lasts a month. There were compulsory training modules but they weren't really an investment. So I guess the firm does invest because you're in the office & paying you but it isn't training & development overload.
This is the strongest aspect of the internship. You do literally spend a month working as a grad consultant. The type of tasks/networking/workload/travel and son on are similar. Therefore the internship is really useful is deciding whether you would like a career in consulting. I spent a lot of time on client site which is pretty accurate of a grad consultant.
Somewhat. I was only there for a short while & spent a lot of time on the client site so wasn't really exposed to this. Plus company culture seems to be all about allowing for new opportunities, equal pay and so on which I guess is something you would only experience as a full time member of staff. The culture & atmosphere was lot more relaxed than I thought it would be however.
The 4 weeks were pretty useful in deciding my future career path & certainly gave me a good idea about a career in consulting. I think it would be better to have greater contact with recent grads & hear what they are doing to see whether the work is different fro different people. But obviously it was more helpful than doing nothing all summer.
Everything Else
However, they were not very clear about payment. Was a big worry & disappointment with the internship.
Yes plenty of opportunities to network. You get introduced to a lot of people through your buddy and via the other interns. Some of it is left up to you which can be a bit daunting but I guess that it what it will be like as a grad anyway. You also meet a lot of other KPMG employees just through working on a project- and its up to you how much you network with them.
The social events were good. there were two types: ones with your team & ones with other interns. Because I was away with the client I mainly went to team socials rather than social events in London for the interns. But both were good and there was always something on. London is pretty expensive though so you could easily end up spending all the money you just earned.
Not much to say here really- was only there for a month so not really a priority to do things outside of the work. But I know they have charity days that you can do each year and have their own sports clubs for people to get involved in. Also a gym in the main London Office & seems like the social scene for full time employees is pretty good.
Yes I would purely because you get a grad job interview out of it. If you can complete the insight & the interview and go back to uni with a grad job then you're laughing. The insight itself was useful & enjoyable and being paid is a bonus. Also KPMG area big corp and with that comes all the perks- beautiful office, lunch allowance, social events. I would recommend.
