    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very well structured and I enjoyed it throughout. What impressed me most, though, is the culture and the people. It's the first company where I've actually felt that the culture fits the website description. Everyone were extremely helpful and supportive. I was given meaningful tasks and my contribution was appreciated. I've had 4 internship experiences and this one has been the best by far. I've heard similar feedback from other interns throughout the time here.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was given meaningful tasks and my contribution was valued. I felt like I was part of the team rather than coffee bringing intern.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance was given whenever I asked for it. There was also a midterm review that provided me feedback on what I should improve. My supervisor, but also my whole team walked me through the basics of the sector, gave me materials to read and tips on how to get more out of my internship. They always found time for me to answer any questions I had developed.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had stuff to do, sometimes too much stuff. my days were interesting and rather intense. My work started at around 6:30am and I usually finished at around 7pm with occasional longer days in between. The relatively long days weren't filled with face-hours, but actual, relevant work that I was given. Whenever I had time from the projects I was given, I could work on my main project.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I started off with a simple data gathering main project, but as time passed I was given more responsibility. I felt that my team trusted me with things that were sent out to clients and had to be done right. I think the amount of responsibility really depends on your skills, ability to not make silly mistakes and your passion and proactiveness. Whenever I had a slower moment and asked if anyone needed help with anything, I was given a chance to do something different and learn.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've developed a wide range of skills during this internship from analytical skill and attention to detail to communication skills. I feel like the skills I've gained are easily transferable and useful wherever I go. We started off with a week of training that wasn't too relevant to my sector, but provided a good overview to the banking industry in general.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very friendly, supportive and professional. I was extremely surprised by how I was treated. It almost felt as I wasn't an intern, but part of the team. The structure also seems very flat. I was sitting next to executive directors. Even though the hours are long, people were generally happy and motivated.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship started off with a week of training before we hit out desks. After that, there were constant talks and events for interns to attend. We also had a trading game that ran throughout the experience, which made the whole internship more diverse and interesting. I am happy with the organising of the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first week had a lot of external speakers coming to teach and educate us. Furthermore, there were external speakers that gave talks throughout the rest of the internship. The company had organised the internship very well and it was well structured. I feel I got all the support I could ask for.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would accept the offer without thinking twice. I really enjoyed my team, other people on my floor, my job as well as the general company culture. I would be very happy to continue working in UBS after my Masters degree. The hours are quite long, but the salary is very competitive and there will be options to work from home when the company moves into a new office.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We had several socials for the interns as well as socials for the Research floor. I was able to get to know other interns quite well, both in research and also from other divisions. I was also able to network with senior people in the company during the networking events, which helped me to settle in faster.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well, it's London. The cost of living is crazy high, especially coming from Eastern Europe, but the salary was sufficient to cope with the high costs. Rent for a room in a 3-bedroom apartment for me was £772/month. A studio apartment would have cost me more than £1000. Alcohol prices in pubs start from around £4-5.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Shoreditch is very close, but the whole area is also well supplied with different pubs and bars. Nightlife in the middle of the London is as good as you can expect. There is something for everyone! Whatever your preferences are when it comes to enjoying a night out, you'll find it in London.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Working hours were long, so there weren't very many opportunities for me to get involved in other activities outside of work. I tried to find time in the evening to go to GYM/jogging or meet my friends, but most of the evenings I just went home, had dinner and went to bed. That's to be expected in that area of work though.
