The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my internship over the summer. Was very exciting to be apart of the firm and great to be apart of day to day life in Audit.
I was very well looked after over my 6 weeks at the firm. I never felt out of place and everyone was able and so willing to help from the very first day. I never felt like a burden and I felt like I was apart of the family from the very first day.
Support was incredible by our managers and everyone around us. Everyone was willing to help and pointed us in the right direction whenever asked. Guidance by management was incredible. My line manager in particular made it very easy to go to him with any problems.
Myself personally had some slow days. I was still given a lot of work but in short bursts. Understandably as there were 9 of us to give work to! I never felt like I had absolutely nothing to do though, as we had training, presentations and general administrative tasks to complete. I believe this was great that we were able to do them at work and thus weren't expected to be working long hours over the weekend to get these tasks done.
A lot more than I thought I would be. I really got to engage with the different steps of an Audit, given accounts and confidential information to handle. I attended meetings which I never thought I'd be able to and overall given a great amount of responsibility considering we were only employed for 6 weeks!
Not so much in my degree as I study Mathematics, however beyond they will be extremely useful. I have learnt a lot more about the business world and learnt simple skills like excel in detail to how to handle clients, meetings and be professional. Even workshops at Bradenham I believe will help me throughout the rest of my career, by teaching me valuable skills such as how to give a good presentation!
The Company
General atmosphere was very upbeat, happy and talkative. There was never a dull moment in the office and everyone is so friendly and happy to help. When you walk into the office each morning people you don't even know from other departments greet you with a hello and small things like this make it a lot happier start to the morning and thus the rest of your day.
Everything was very clearly laid out with what we had to do and when. We knew exactly what we were doing the first couple of days and hereafter were given good instructions on where to go and what to do. We switched departments half way through our internship to get a feel for everything the company has to offer both in Audit and Tax and this was very well orchestrated and a fantastic opportunity for us.
Investment in the interns was massive. We were on courses and conferences that the graduates and placement students were enrolled on too. To be apart of this when you're only in the firm for 6 weeks is incredible. We were given computers and rucksacks too, we were very well equipped for our day to day lives in the firm- treated as someone there for much longer than 6 weeks.

Very appealing. Towards the end of the internship we do a presentation which decides whether we get a graduate offer or not. This is an amazing opportunity to showcase everything you've learnt whilst being at the firm, as well as them taking into account your performance over the last 6 weeks. To be employed with Grant Thornton would be an amazing opportunity.
The Culture
Very good social scene. We quickly as interns set up a 'Whatsapp' chat between us which allowed us to communicate very well and enabled us to make friends a lot quicker. For the first few days we were all together each day which allowed us to get off to a great start. The social scene with colleagues was very good too. We were always invited to their drinks and dinners that they were going to as a group- never felt left out.
Cost of living was zero for myself as I could commute from home and it was a cheap journey on the train. Socialising was OK as it was in Reading which is a student town in itself so is not all that expensive. For lunch you could get food from downstairs Bistro or WHSmith which was very affordable.
Reading is the closest place to go on a night out which is buzzing. It is a student town itself and my home town and thus for me was perfect as I was not only going out with my colleagues but knew the area. For others, it wasn't home but they agreed that it was a perfect place to be going out.
Not so much for the interns but this is probably more our fault than the firms. We are only here for 6 weeks and thus to get settled in whilst also hunting for opportunities to get out of the office is hard! We as interns were able to set up a charity event which was a great opportunity to get involved in the office in our own little way!
