The Role
It was very enjoyable- the work was varied, and there was enough work of different nature that you weren't doing the same thing all day.
The team was amazing- they made me feel like an actual member of their team rather than just an intern, and I knew that the work I was putting gin was actually going to be useful, rather than it being "intern work". There were plenty of opportunities to socialise, and I was invited to social events with the team too. I felt very welcome.
My managers and supervisors were great! They focused on personal and business goals, and ensured that these goals were set out from the start. These goals were then reviewed at appropriate intervals, and this was good because even if I don't go into this job as a graduate, I know that I have developed personally, and the skills and experiences that I gained will be invaluable. My managers were easily accessible and they were always available for discussion and for me to ask questions.
To start with, I wasn't very busy and the work was only little bits, but by the end of the rotation, I was trusted with whole projects. I found this very helpful. A helpful suggestion may to have rotations to have a sheet which lists out reading material for the intern to do before they properly start on their role- this way, he/she can start on more jobs quicker, rather than having to wait? However, saying that, I did appreciate having someone work through each item and explain everything to me, and this did indeed make it more valuable than been given a guide. By the end of the rotation, it was very much about time management and finding the time to do the various different tasks.
I really appreciate the right balance of responsibility, while having the reassurance that the members of the team will be ready to check my work if need be. For example, it was important that the team reminded me to check the email with the team member before sending it to external clients, as it removed simple errors which I found myself making initially. I was trusted to set up calls and talk to people myself, and I was allowed to get on with work in my own time, and practise my own time management skills. It was exactly the right balance that I needed because I had no previous experience in this sector.
It has helped me in giving me an experience different to what I am used to, and that is something I wanted when I applied for the internship. The personal goals that I have aimed for will be ones that will be useful to keep carrying on in my career, and is indeed for life.
The Company
It was very open, and I knew that I could always approach people if I had any questions. There was shared food and conversations, and everyone was very friendly.
It was very structured and organised, and this was something I greatly appreciated. I liked having a calendar and a book on the placement from the start. I appreciated the training week because it was really good in giving an overview, and the online pre-work was also very useful. The meetings and items I had to attend, etc were in my calendar, and I could always ask to rearrange. There were even social events booked in.
My line manager spent a lot of time in finding out what I wanted form this placement, and she tried to make special arrangements according to my interests.
Financial Bonus
I have a very good impression of the organisation, and I know that it is a great company to work for.
The Culture
Yes, the training week was great in trying to get us all to know one another. The group in Corporate Centre set up a Facebook group and tried to go out for lunch and after work drinks together. There were also organised social events, and it was also great to see the others at meetings and talks.
London is very expensive and obviously banks are in an expensive area. However, UBS did give us an accommodation allowance of £1000, which is obviously better than nothing, but still not enough to cover all of accommodation.
There was a good nightlife- it's London! There's plenty of things to do, and UBS, being in the centre of London is at a position that makes it easy to access other places via the Tube. Spitalfields market is walking distance away and makes a great stop for lunch.
There were lunch with the team, and social events when people moved jobs to which we, as interns, were invited to. There were also intern social events which occurred, and a day volunteering at Shoreditch Park.
