The Role
I really enjoyed it overall!
I felt that whilst what I did was useful, because I was only there for 6 weeks there was very little meaningful work I could do. However, this was not the fault of my team, just due to the length of internship. I was working in insolvency and some areas were quite technical and I had no previous experience in the area. However, my colleagues were all lovely and did their best to make me feel like one of the team.
I was given and manager and a buddy, both of whom were extremely present during my internship. They were extremely approachable and willing to answer any question I had, and kept an eye on my through regular catch ups. The internship also included a formal appraisal process, that included an interim and full appraisal - these were good opportunities to discuss your goals with your manager.
It depended - some days I had a lot of work and was kept busy, other days were a little quiet. However, this time could be used effectively to work on other projects for the internship rather than the team, and for developing my knowledge of the company and other business lines.
I was given complete responsibility over the tasks I was set, however, they were often quite small tasks. Again, as I said above, this was probably due to the technical knowledge required for the area in which I worked, and my lack of previous experience in this area. There were other internship projects, such as fundraising and writing a blog, that gave me opportunities for responsibility outside of my role.
My knowledge of insolvency improved greatly which will be extremely useful if I choose to go back into this area, although it is of little relevance to my degree. However, my excel skills have improved, and the 2 day residential training on communication and presentation skills will be relevant where ever I ultimately work.
The Company
The Finsbury Square office is in the heart of the city but manages to maintain a collegial feel. People around the office were extremely friendly, and my team and floor specifically had regular drinks and lunches where I got to socialise with my colleagues outside of a work environment. It was also not uncommon for free food to be left for all in the kitchens.
Given that this was the first year that advisory internships had been offered at GT, they were extremely well organised. I was contacted my recruitment, my manager and my buddy multiple times prior to the internship with relevant information that helped me to feel more relaxed when I started. There was both a local and firm wide induction that were well structured and helpful, and a firm wide intern social at a bar in Shoreditch which was great fun! The appraisal processed and goal setting had also obviously been given a lot of thought, although they were a little vague in places. There was also a 2 day residential training course offered to all interns which was a really great addition that I know friends in other internships have not been fortunate enough to have.
Although there was little formal training for my role (due to the specialised nature of the department and the short length of time I spent there), there was the 2 day residential communication and presentation skills workshop at GT's training facility in High Wycombe. I think that more training would have definitely been offered if I'd spent a longer period of time there.

Company Parties/Events
There is a graduate scheme that we are given lots of information about during our placement.
The Culture
Really social interns and placement students, in addition to regular team drinks and lunches.
The City so very expensive!!!
Nice pubs and bars around the office and a 5 minute walk from Shoreditch.
Not sure, would need to spend longer with GT to comment.
