The Role
I interned in the Bristol office for four weeks and was involved in numerous roles within the Development team - including valuations strategic land management and agency work. The internship was really varied in terms of tasks and each week, I was out of the office a couple of times visiting sites, as well as being invited on work social and networking events.
Not just the team I was placed in, but the whole Savills office is really friendly and I felt really welcome from day one. I was given plenty of work throughout the four weeks and always given feedback or the opportunity to ask questions - meaning I felt the work and my input was very valued.
Savills assign you a mentor before you start who is a recent graduate to the company. This person gives you an induction on the first day and can help with any queries throughout the internship which was really helpful. Also, I worked directly with nearly every member of the Development team meaning I was given guidance and feedback from all different levels of seniority and on different projects.
A lot busier than I expected! I thought I may be twiddling my thumbs on some days, especially at the beginning, but there was always something to get involved with. Most importantly, working within the Development team meant that there was a real variation of jobs - from agency work to valuation - so I received a well-rounded view of a Savills graduate surveyor role.
My role felt similar to that of a graduate surveyor - I was trusted to attend site visits, meet clients and call agents on the phone. There was a good balance of having ownership of my tasks but also able to speak to people when unsure. I could see how the work I did was used by others in the office and how it played in the overall delivery of a project.
I have already completed my university studies but this internship would have been so helpful had I done it before my final year. For me, the skills and knowledge I have learnt will be really beneficial in upcoming job interviews and when I start as a graduate surveyor. In my office, there was the occasional Lunch & Learn - this is where someone from Savills comes to speak to the office about their specialism while everyone has lunch. There's also Go-To training sessions where you dial in to a presentation being made to the London interns. Both are really helpful for training and understanding more about Savills and the APC.
The Company
The office is really friendly and sociable with people often popping out to meet with clients for breakfast or lunch. Nearly every day there's someone's birthday or a celebration - so there's nearly always cake in the office! There's also Friday drinks in the afternoon which sometimes rolls into after work drinks too.
The internship is very well organised. There is a lot of admin to do before you start and then in your first few days too, but this helps you to get organised and feel prepared before you start. It's very helpful to be assigned the Graduate mentor who can be a point of contact throughout the internship.
The Go-To sessions (where you dial in to presentations made to London interns) were really useful. I listened in to ones about the APC and the graduate application. Throughout my month internship, two people from graduate recruitment/personal development came to the Bristol office. Both were really happy to talk to me about my experience and future applications which was appreciated.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing.
The Culture
I was the only intern in the office at the time, but the graduates and younger members of staff attend networking events and socials together. There also seems to be a good social scene across Savills with different offices coming together for sports event and socials.
I lived at home while doing my internships so relatively cheap!
Bristol has a great nightlife and social scene!
I think because it was the summer and lots of people were on holiday, it was relatively quiet in terms of activities. But from talking to people in the office, it seems that Savills frequently socialise with clients outside of work (be that playing golf or going for lunch) as well as arrange office sports events and socials.
