The Role
It was a great experience. I found it invaluable to exposed to such a large co-operation and to learn how all of the different departments interact in order to achieve one fundamental goal.
The team that I worked in were very helpful and made me feel welcome whenever I was around. They gave me work to be getting on with and made me feel welcome into the team from day 1
I had a supervisor that was very active and was always willing to have meetings with me when I wanted to discuss anything. We would have a weekly meeting and a quarterly review.
My role was slightly disjointed as work was given to me on an ad hoc basis meaning that I never felt I fully got to grips with a lot of my work.
Not a great deal-I felt I was very much a junior on my team and therefore wasn't given a great deal of responsibility
I learnt the fundamental skills of teamwork and creativeness in challenging situations. When I didn't have a lot to do I had to be creative and think of what work could be done to help the team-this was sometimes quite a challenge.
The Company
The atmosphere was good and fun-it was light hearted and we used the 'hot desk' scheme so I got to know many of my colleagues well throughout the time that I was there. I felt that this was important, especially for interns as they can sometimes feel disjointed from the establishment.
This was a very impressive part about the scheme. It seemed like our main contact was indeed in contact with us everyday. He was very active, always organising intern fundraising events, socials and the like. Furthermore, prior to the internship he was very good at replying to emails with answers to any questions that we may have had. It is a well organised scheme.
Very much so. HR gave us an opportunity to look through our CV and cover letters and help improve our skills on them. They were very much interested in helping us improve the content of our CV with fundraising events. Furthermore, I had a mentor who was completely external to the team that I worked on which was invaluable to relay comments to him that were all in confidence.
Travel loan
Whilst the charity sector isn't an industry that I am necessarily interested in, there seemed to be good job employment prospects within the firm-I know this from the 'Intranet' that shares job availabilities with current employees of the firm.
The Culture
Yes-we always went for lunch together and the intern convenor was very keen on setting up socials within the group, such as 'Thirsty Thursday's' (all go to the pub after work!). Furthermore, the intern fundraising projects brought us all together again.
This was the challenging part of my internship-In an unpaid role the cost of living eventually became too much for me to afford and that is why my internship had to be cut short.
There are lots of bars and fun places to eat out, especially in the summer with good outside areas.
All of the intern fundraising events were generally out of work hours and there was always an option to get involved with this.
