    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The insight was a fantastic way to meet new people, gain an in depth insight into the firm, and really find out whether it was the right fit for me. The high quality work which we were given, the fantastic socials, and invaluable skills workshops really made the insight a well rounded and enjoyable experience. The scheme was designed to ensure that we had a well rounded insight into the firm.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Since I was given valuable work to be done by my supervisors, all of which was of importance meant that all the contributions that I made were really appreciated. This meant that I really felt part of the team and enabled me to integrate into my respective departments. Everyone I met was genuinely interested to meet me and find out about my background, which really went a long way in making me feel valued.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • During the insight, for each department we were allocated both a Trainee Buddy and an Associate supervisor, both of whom were there to offer us support and guidance throughout the 3 weeks. Furthermore, we kept in continuous contact with graduate recruitment and had catch up meetings half way through the scheme to ensure that we were enjoying our time at the firm. The level of support and guidance was therefore very good.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Receiving feedback after each piece of work that was submitted to a work supervisor was a great way to ensure that I could oversee my own personal development. Learning how to take on board feedback is an extremely important skill, which I feel I was able to develop during my time at Baker & McKenzie.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Receiving comprehensive training for a day at the beginning of the scheme proved to be extremely useful throughout the duration of the programme. Each morning we received a talk from a different practice area within the firm so that we could gain an overall insight into its internal working process. This in itself was a great experience, so that we could gain an insight into the firm as a whole, before spending the rest of the day in our departments.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Baker & McKenzie really put emphasis on the culture within the firm. From day one it is clear why: the atmosphere is extremely welcoming and friendly. Everyone within the firm was aware that there were Vacation Scheme students joining the firm, and therefore ensured that they went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Particular highlights included seeing this same atmosphere reinforced at the firm's summer party.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At the end of the scheme we are all automatically given a training contract interview. This meant that the firm was genuinely interested in continuing their relationship with you and reinforced the belief that they are looking to invest in you from the word go. Furthermore, the firm put on a number of training sessions, such as a networking skills session to ensure personal development.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Being allocated a trainee buddy for the duration of the scheme meant that we could get an insight into a junior level role which would be the equivalent to the role we would undertake if we started at the firm. Being given large amounts of responsibility meant that we came as close as possible to what it would be like to have a full time role with the company.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The scheme included events with an array of people of different levels of seniority within the firm, which enabled us to get a true picture of the firm's culture as a whole. Being able to spend 3 weeks at the firm meant that we could gain a first hand experience into what life at Baker & McKenzie was really like.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Although prior to the scheme I was already set on this career path, the insight further reinforced my desire to pursue a career in commercial law. Being able to sit in two practice areas of the firm enabled me to add to my experience within different areas in the profession and has helped influence my thoughts on particular areas of law which I might be interested in.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • We were adequately reimbursed. We were paid around £320 per week,

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Sitting in departments of the firm meant that we had exposure to employees of the firm every day, and thus there were ample opportunities to network with and meet employees of the firm. Furthermore, specific networking events were put on so that we could meet specific people within the firm, such as the Managing Committee.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There was a myriad of social events and networking opportunities. From an initial 3 course welcome lunch, to Bowling/Karaoke and a Curry Night, there were plenty of opportunities to meet people from the firm in a more relaxed environment. They were a great way to get to know the other vacation schemers in greater depth and to have fun after a day at the office!

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, I was fortunate enough to be invited along to a department social in Hyde Park where I was able to join the team for a picnic and a game of rounders. In addition to this I was invited along to the department's Friday night drinks. This really highlighted the friendly culture within the firm. Furthermore, we were given talks on the plethora of opportunities that are available for employees to get involved in, from CSR events to mixed tag rugby!
