The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my 6 week internship at Grant Thornton. The one aspect I loved about working at Grant Thornton is the amount of responsibility that I was given straight away. I felt as though I was treated as an equal and was not seen as inferior due to me being only an intern. The coaching culture at Grant Thornton is also another aspect that I really liked about my internship. I was able to ask any questions at any time to my colleagues and they would be more than happy to help me.
I felt as though I have been a valued team member from the first day. This is due to the fact that I was always involved in team meetings, I was given tasks that were challenging therefore my colleagues valued me enough to give me such challenging work. Also, I was always included in audit team meals, which made me feel not only a part of Grant Thornton but the specific team that I was working in.
The one thing that I really liked about the firm is the coaching culture that Grant Thornton has. Team members always took time out of their work to help and assist me with my own. I also felt that my team members were always helpful when I asked questions, if anything, the people at Grant Thornton want you to ask more questions!
I was kept busy with tasks and social events at work. However, as I was in the audit sector, I found myself often waiting for clients to reply (which isn't anyone's fault-it's the nature of the job) which slowed down my work and meant I was unable to complete parts due to waiting for a client response.
As mentioned earlier, I feel that I was given a lot of responsibility considering that I was only a six week intern. I was communicating with the Chief Accountants and the work that I was given was complex which meant that I learnt a great deal about the public sector and audit in particular.
I feel that having done my internship at Grant Thornton I have become so much more confident. I especially found the two day work shop at Bradenham extremely beneficial especially for my future and for university. "Developing your business impact" was the name of the workshop where I greatly improved and learnt new presentation skills which will be invaluable for the future. Also having improved my communication skills is something that will assist me in my degree and beyond.
The Company
I enjoyed working at the office when I was not at the audit client sites. I felt that the general atmosphere at the office was very relaxed and it was an effective working environment. I liked the open plan of the office as this left lots of room for collaboration with my colleagues.
I feel that the internship was very well structured. On the very first day of the internship, we were given a plan of the clients we would be working with over the following weeks to come whilst also scheduling in Wacky Wednesdays and training days at Bradenham. We went to Bradenham for a few days in the fourth week of our internship. I felt that this was greatly structured as I felt prepared from the training to do my final presentation in my final week.
I have felt like a valued employee from day one and lots of responsibility is placed upon you as an intern. This enabled me to develop my own skills and learn new ones constantly. Grant Thornton really take the time to invest in you, I saw this especially at Bradenham when we were on training days. I learnt and improved valuable skills that will be beneficial to me for my career here at Grant Thornton and for when I return to University.

Future employment prospects are very appealing here at Grant Thornton especially in terms of professional qualifications that you will study here. I have been lucky enough to have received a graduate job offer here at Grant Thornton and I can see that I will have great career prospects as I look forward to studying to become a chartered accountant.
The Culture
Yes there was a very good social scene amongst my fellow interns. We all got on really well and together we would organise after work drinks and meals whilst also attending social events organised by Grant Thornton. Having a good social scene really made the internship even more enjoyable, I will definitely be staying in contact with all of them!
This question is not applicable for me, as I stayed with my auntie while I completed my internship so I didn't have to worry about the cost of living. I know that many of the other interns shared flats with friends in the area which made it a lot cheaper and easier to live in London. As I was living quite far out from the office, I will say that train fares became quite expensive.
As I worked in London, the nightlife was very good. There are so many bars/restaurants surrounding the office. This is one of the reasons I love London due to the fact that there is always something going on and there are lots of bars/clubs/restaurants to try out. I would definitely recommend London for that reason if a good nightlife is something people like!
Yes there was lots of opportunities outside of work, there is always something going on in London! After work sometimes, we would go down to Southbank and there would always be activities/bars/socialising areas. London is a great city to live in if you enjoy being out and active as there is always plenty of activities and events on.
