About You
The insight was very well organised and a great deal of effort was put in to ensure we got to know fellow vac schemers and members of the firm. The work, when it was available, was interesting and stimulating however, there were times when this was lacking.
It was nice to occasionally be involved in active cases and pro bono matters and I felt my contributions to these were valued. Trainees and supervisors made an effort to introduce us to the rest of the department and integrate at social events. However, there were times when I was left with little work to do.
There was always someone willing to answer questions and supervisors took the time to explain tasks thoroughly. Appraisal meetings were particularly useful in determining what I had done well whilst sitting in the department and what I could improve on.
I gained a good overview of the work the firm does, thanks to seminars focussing on different department, and the type of work carried out by trainee lawyers. Working within a professional environment also helped me develop networking skills, team working and working towards a deadline.
The Company
Social events and seminars were well advertised, allowing participants to organise their time accordingly. A great deal of effort was made to ensure we always had a point of contact whether it was our supervisor or trainee buddy.
The firm was full of friendly faces and everyone was willing to chat and answer questions.
Associates gave their time to talk to us about their departments and the work trainees could expect within them. Feedback was collected from a number of sources in order to complete thorough appraisal meetings. Could perhaps have provided feedback for individual pieces of work.
I would like to have experienced a wider range of work but appreciate this depends on the department and how busy they are at the time.
During the vacation scheme I was able to experience the culture both in the office and outside at the many social events.
Everything Else
I was paid a fair amount for the two week vacation scheme as well as having travel expenses reimbursed for the assessment centre and social event prior to it.
Lawyers were highly approachable whilst working in the office and also during social events. A number of events were put on to ensure we were able to meet as many firm members as possible.
Well organised and fun!
I was able to participate in a pro bono matter.
I had an enjoyable two weeks and gained a good insight into the work the firm does. However, I would like to have gained more first hand experience of actually carrying it out myself.
