About You
I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was very well planned to provide a sense of realism and make us work together in teams. It really gave you the opportunity to stretch yourself and put yourself in roles you normally wouldn't undertake. Some parts were a bit too challenging however, in the sense that they threw you in at the deep end with one task that was difficult to understand as it used a lot of specialist terms but overall I really enjoyed it.
I felt very valued as it wasn't that big of a group, just over 20 of us if I had to guess. The organisers worked very hard to learn everyone's names and speak to you as if you were an equal. Obviously there was the knowledge that you were being looked after in a big company but that didn't really bother me too much.
The organisers promote independent work so if you do not require guidance then you will not be pestered with it but if at any point you require any assistance the organisers will be more than happy to help you with anything you need, they were very accommodating.
During our week we had a heavy focus on presentation, communication and employability skills. These skills will undoubtedly help me in my further career prospects and at university as my team working and leadership skills were also developed. Overall the skills learned throughout the week are extremely practical even if you do not go into the specific field of the company
The Company
The insight was very well structured, they made sure we had enough to do throughout the day and we had enough time to do it without it getting lethargic and dull. For ours if we were finished before 5:30 then we were let go early and that kept the pace of activities when we were actually at the offices fast and the enthusiasm high.
The general atmosphere was great, everyone wanted to be there and so was enthusiastic. Everyone I spoke to was pleasant and I easily spoke and was comfortable with many of the people there. As touched upon earlier you are treated as an adult which is very nice and helps you yourself get invested in the role and the tasks at hand. Overall the general atmosphere was great and I looked forward to arriving every day
Deloitte, at least in my opinion, put a lot into our training. A particular highlight was on the first day when they had an external, independent company come in to help us with our presentation and communication skills. This was a very thought out and rewarding session of which I am very glad I was a part of.
We were shown throughout the week the different aspects of the departments in the company and an outline of what each of them does; this included several times throughout the week employees of Deloitte coming down to us and talking with us. These sessions included Q&As, talks and activities where we could find out what we wanted about each department and the company as a whole. Also we were given a work shadowing session where we were shown what employees in a certain department actually do throughout their day which I found fascinating because it wasn't something set up for us, it was actual reports and accounts of businesses and people. Which made it very interesting to see.
Whenever we spoke to employees of the company it was more of them presenting themselves to us so it didn't really give us an insight of what the day to day running and culture of the business is like, however I didn't expect to fully get that and I managed to instead find common themes between what each employee said and the main "selling points" to gain an idea
It definitely gave me more options to consider, I found out about training and employability opportunities that I previously did not know about as well as proving me with more insight into the actual work load of the profession. Before this I would not even had considered going into the business advisory industry, however I know have more options about what career opportunities I want to take.
Everything Else
At the end of the week we were provided with a form and an address/email address to send our travel receipts off to. I have not been reimbursed yet as it said that there was often a 6-8 week delay but I have no reason to believe that this won't be paid. It isn't the sort of work where you would be paid so I had no expectation to be paid or even have my travel expenses covered so it was a nice bonus
Yes there was a networking event put on for us one evening where a handful of employees came down and socialised with us, there were also several times when employees can down and spoke with or to us, some were question and answer sessions, some were activities with us which involved learning about their department of the company and some were to assess us on our interview or presentation skills, so we did see quite a few employees.
They were definitely useful as we could ask any questions in a more personal manner than an open question and answer session that we had previously. However there was a clear divide between the employees and us, which was to be expected and isn't a bad thing, but it just meant that apart from asking and answering questions it didn't go further into the professional element than that, so we wouldn't get their contact details for example. It was still good though, if a tad unnecessary
Not particularly, it wouldn't have been something I would've placed much emphasis on in my inquiries as I would just assume some of the most basic activities were there. I believe we may have been told about some activities but it wasn't made a big deal so I can't really recall if I'm being honest, however all the people we spoke to were very friendly and I'm sure would have been more than willing to tell you about any activities that go on if you ask
Without a doubt, it has helped me undoubtedly with skills I can transfer to any part of my life, team working, leadership skills, how to effectively communicate my message and how to present it to people. It gave me the opportunities to put myself out there and lead a team or present a pitch and I may not have done that otherwise. Even if you are not interested in the industry I would say go for it because you may get some new information that may make you interested as I did or even if you didn't it will help you in other areas of your life and even if that doesn't interest you then saying you have done a work experience with Deloitte looks fantastic on your personal statement or CV
