The Role
I really enjoyed this internship and I believe this is the best one I have done so far. The atmosphere in the firm is great, everyone is willing to help and take time to sit with you and discuss about the business. I worked on 2 projects and both of them were really interesting.
I felt that I was really valued by my team. As long as you show that you are strongly motivated and that you prove at the beginning of your internship that you pay attention to details, and that you ask whenever you don't understand something, I feel that the team trusts you.
My managers were really willing to help me to get the most of my summer internship. They were taking time to explain the business and the division I was in and were always happy to answer any questions I had. Guidance was given whenever it was necessary but I could ask for more if needed.
The workload was perfect to me. I never felt that I had nothing to do. I could always help my team with their daily tasks or own projects, work on my long term project (final presentation), read the news or internal research as well as look for opportunities for the trading game.
I felt that the team gave me lots of responsibilities, or more than I would have expected and that was a good surprise. I still had guidance and my managers were reviewing my work but the projects I worked on really contributed to my team's research and I feel that I added value to my team.
I am now done with studies but I strongly believe that this summer internship in Equity Research helped me improve my analytical skills as well as understand the business and how research works. UBS also provided us with the right tools and training to understand how to make differentiated research. This will be really useful for my career.
The Company
As mentioned above, the atmosphere was really nice. Everyone was willing to help and take time to sit with me and explain what they were doing and how their division is working. They took time to answer questions, and I think that it was a great opportunity to learn more about the business and the different divisions.
The internship was really well organised. It started with a training week and all summer interns were together. It gave an understanding of the whole business. Then we joined our team. During the summer, there were speaker series, presentation on our own division as well as events.
As mentioned on the question above, UBS gave us a week of training at the beginning of the summer internship to help us understand the whole business. There were also opportunities to learn more all along the summer with presentations related to our business area which were really interesting.
Subsidised Canteen
In terms of future employment prospects, I believe that summer interns have an opportunity to be offered a graduate program by the end of their internship (graduate program that would start the next year). The company seems to be recruiting every year graduates from the summer interns class of the previous year.
The Culture
There was a really good atmosphere between summer interns in Global Research at UBS. Everyone was reminding each other of the next meetings and would let know the summer intern if he / she was about to miss one. I think that we got along very well with each other.
London is an expensive city. I guess that I was most surprise with the rent as when staying for only two months, it is not easy to find a place to live and rent are therefore even more expensive than when looking for a long term place. Otherwise, I believe that the cost of living is pretty much the same as in other big cities.
There were many bars near the workplace, especially near the Broadgate circle where it is really nice to go after work, I guess especially during summer time. Lots of people are going there at the end of the week. Some events were actually organised (by the Human Resources) there during the summer internship.
I guess I did not do much activities during the week but week ends in Global Research were free. London is a great city to visit, especially during summer time, and as a foreigner, I had plenty of time to enjoy different areas of the city all along the summer.
