The Role
The internship was a great opportunity to understand, learn and network. I used the chance to explore different roles within a bank, met directors from various divisions and made some amazing contacts. I really enjoyed the experience and my work. Had a brilliant summer.
I believe this is one of the reasons why I would prefer Barclays over any other work place personally. Everyone at the bank valued the interns really well. All the directors and senior people made an effort to get to know us and gave us quality time to understand the role/division
There were some amazing ideas/schemes put in place for providing support to the interns such as the buddy scheme, senior mentor guidance. It was really helpful. My line manager was extremely open and helpful too. We were given a lot of support from the HR too and all new ideas were given a fair chance.
Quite busy on most days, I would say it was pretty decently balanced between having enough work and not being over burdened.
I was working within a project based team so I worked very closely to the project in terms of being on all conference calls, impact assessment reports etc.
The skills I acquired during this internship will help me throughout my life. Learnt how to write a good business analysis report, network, work in a professional environment and many more.
The Company
The general atmosphere and the work environment at the offices was extremely pleasant and motivating. Everyone was very nice and keen to always help.
The internship was extremly well organised and was entirely built around helping the interns transit into the work environment and also be able to get the most out of our experience at Barclays. The events were well spaced and extremely relevant to our roles. They helped us develop and over all understanding of Barclays and different roles with the division.
In terms of personal training and development, Barclays organised various training sessions during the first week and they helped us gain a general knowledge of the banking industry. I also had the chance to attend one of the agile workshops which was extremely stimulating as my team was moving into the agile way of working and i was able to contribute my input to the process.

Personally, for me, i believe working at barclays in the future and starting my career with them would be a great opportunity. The summer internship also helps in being fast tracked for the graduate programme which is really helpful as I will be able to determine the outcome of my application before going into my last year at University.
The Culture
Yes! There were various networking events organised by Barclays and others that were planned by the interns. It was quite exciting meeting so many new people and learning more about them.
The cost of living depends heavily on the choice of accommodation and the area you pick. For me, i choose to live in one of the student halls in mile end and my per week cost was simialr to a basic weekly cost of a student accommodation in london. Some of the others shared a house which can be cheaper sometimes. It really varies, you could be paying as less as 150 per week to as high as 300 per week. The social costs also depend on howoften you choose to go out for drinks or other decisions.
London has a wide variety although within canary wharf there are nice bars.
Yes, loads of extra activities, sports, volunteering, citizenship challenge etc
