    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very well organised. My line manager decided to assign a mentor as he would not have been able to assist me at all times due to his busy schedule. I appreciated this a lot as this helped me develop throughout the internship and achieve the goals that were fixed at the beginning.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team members were great to stay around. Even though they are very close, they let me in from the very beginning. Everyone was available to help me when I was stuck and tried to pitch in where possible for additional development that wasn't strictly related to my projects.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Plenty of support was given by both my line manager and mentor. My projects required a lot of interaction with many different people in the business and I was always assisted in setting up meetings with the correct people, but at the same time without holding my hand as I was left on my own when going to meetings. This was very helpful in improving myself as an employee and I think everyone appreciated this approach and were more keen in helping me out in achieving a successful outcome.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy most of the time, but without having to pull my hair for desperation. I had three projects (I was expecting only one before starting the internship) which helped in keeping me busy at all time, especially when waiting for other people to be free. During lunch I always read the news and took some time to relax. Coffee/tea breaks were regular and this helped me concentrate and relax especially in days where I was running around the facility and never got time to sit at my desk.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Tons of responsability. Having to meet new people on my own and getting them to trust my work was very hard, but also made me appreciate the internship even more. I had to show around external suppliers and negotiate deals (we're talking about tens of thousands of pounds) that would improve the manufacturing operations. I didn't have direct access to budget, but I was given the opportunity to pitch several business plans to my line manager, and a few will be taken into further consideration for implementation.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Probably these skills will not be used in university, but that was something I knew and planned. My goal was to expand my skill base by undergoing an internship that would provide me with knowledge that university does not give. Having said so, everything I learnt will be very useful in my future career as I'm planning on following a similar path

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The banter was great. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]This also allowed to bond with the colleagues much quicker than expected and therefore helped me in going through my objectives much quicker.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. I recieved all the IT stuff on my first day, as well as my objectives. I was quite unlucky since my line manager was on holiday on my first week, and my mentor was on training. Even though this was incovenient, the other members of the team took the burden of showing me around, answer my questions and get me settled in as quickly as possible. Also, since my manager and mentor planned on my projects way before I joint this made it easier to get a head start.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My learning is a great platform to get additional training. Some of it is compulsory as it's directly related to the internship, but if you have spare time it is always useful to do some extra online training. I've also participated in drop in sessions for future employment in the company, and it is clear that if i recieve an offer much more training would be necessary and/or available for me to complete.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I like the philosphy, I think the company is going in the right direction, and the grad scheme is very appealing for how it's formatted, giving three 6 months placement (one of which abroad, which is one of my main priorities) and then one year as leader of a team. A high % of interns come back as a graduate, I plan on being one of them. This has come up with my line manager from the very first few review meetings and I'm therefore quite confident.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I commuted from Nottingham, as I have a house there. This limited the possibility to participate in social events, which was quite a shame, but at the same time allowed me to save more money by not having a double rent, so overall I'm not too fussed about the missed opportunity.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Live in Nottingham, so don't know

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nottingham nightlife is very good, cheap and much better than Derby for the little I know about the latter.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are plenty of opportunities, but as I said I wasn't in the conditions to take advantage of these
