The Role
So far, I have really enjoyed my summer internship in Treasury at Barclays. One of the best things about interning here has been the ability to widen my network and get to meet so many different people from across the bank. Barclays truly does have a flat hierarchy and it is so easy to approach people, whether they be grads or directors, who are willing to give up their time to help you, no matter how busy they are.
I genuinely feel like a valued member of my team. Within the first few days of my internship, I was given some responsibility to deliver on specific tasks and objectives. My input is valued in team meetings and I instantly felt like I was a colleague, as opposed to "just an intern", and the opportunity to add value to the team is definitely there.
My line manager has been extremely supportive in teaching me about different aspects of the role our team plays within Treasury. He has also been really helpful in providing guidance around who I should meet in order to learn more about a particular topic, as well as introducing me to lots of people from all over the bank. Many other people, from grads to VPs to directors, have also been very supportive.
Some days are busier than others, but on the whole, I have never really had a "boring" day and there is always something to be done. In my particular role within Treasury, it involved some individual work on projects, as well as lots of meetings with different areas of the business and with other Treasury areas. Furthermore, the internship programme was packed full of learning sessions and networking sessions.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility during my internship, especially considering how junior I am. I have been given the responsibility to work on a few projects, which will hopefully add value to Treasury. Furthermore, I am often responsible for writing actions and organising meetings for my team.
I think that the training I have received so far from this internship aren't really that likely to assist me in my degree studies. Studying Economics is not as closely related to Treasury as I would've originally imagined. However, I do believe that my skills of analysis have definitely been developed during this internship, which will no doubt be beneficial to me in my degree studies and beyond.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office has been an incredibly positive one. The open plan nature of it means that it's very easy to meet new people and you quickly start to recognise a lot of people. The atmosphere on the floor was a very friendly one and alongside my day job, I also had a lot of fun with my colleagues.
The overall internship has generally been pretty well organised. Lots of speaker sessions, learning sessions and networking events had been put together for us interns, which was helpful. The only thing missing was some more Treasury-specific training sessions, which would've been extremely useful at the start of the internship.
I do feel like Barclays has invested in me and my own personal development, by putting on lots of learning sessions and networking events, which all do go some way in helping me develop myself and my career. However, as mentioned, I wish there had been some Treasury-specific training sessions available.

Future employment prospects at Barclays are supposed to be extremely good. Many people have told me that one of the best things about Barclays is the fact that there is internal mobility and that there is ample opportunity to move around within the different functions at Barclays.
The Culture
Yes, I got along very well with the other Treasury summer interns as well as the grads and other permanent employees. We often meet up for lunch or after work to socialise. Furthermore, the Treasury Summer Social was another great way to meet new people and get to know them outside of a work environment.
London is definitely not cheap, but for good reason - there are so many different activities to do outside of work!
There are lots of bars in Canary Wharf where people often go to after work.
Yes, there are so many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work. The summer interns got the chance to be involved with a citizenship challenge, working with charities to work on their social media guidelines. Furthermore, there have been lots of sporting activities in conjunction with the Rio 2016 Olympics organised, which are a great way to get involved and meet people from across the firm.
