The Role
All the Internship related visits and talks were enjoyable, informative, and gave a good insight into the company. Due to the nature of Barclays being a massive corporation however, I was unable to do any productive work for the first few weeks due to IT issues. The actual work was enjoyable, and I was given a lot of responsibility. The other interns were all great, however Barclays hosted barely any internship networking events, so we had to organise everything ourselves.
Very, I was given a lot of responsibility and put code into production very quickly.
Help was there when needed.
Busy enough. I had a set project I needed to complete and thus did enough work to get it done. I also got involved in some extra events that required preparation and work for.
A lot. I got code into production almost straight away, and the project I was working on will be used every day by the traders.
I've just completed my degree. The skills I learnt will help in my web development career however.
The Company
Quiet, to be honest most of the desk were empty and it felt like a bit of a ghost town. It would have been nice to have been surrounded by more people my own age.
The Internship seemed to be set up well. However as previously stated, there was only in interns networking event and drinks held, on the very first day, when apparently the year before they had been happening every week.
We were given talks by some senior people in the company which was interesting. In terms of other resources, I'm not entirely sure. I didn't really recieve any specialist training (except for some financial training in the first week). It would have been nice to have been provided some courses to aid the technologies I was using and learning.
Appealing. The company is huge and has many different components, so a lot of different things to experience.
The Culture
Yes, but it had to be organised amongst ourselves. Barclays didn't do much to facilitate this.
London. So fairly expensive as you'd expect. Canary Wharf is also an expensive place to go for a meal/out for drinks at.
London, so the world is your oyster.
Lots. Citizenship challenges, technology challenges.
