The Role
Having the experience of not being well included in the global HSE spoiled my placement (as I was promised I would visit other faurecia plants and work with other plant HSE departments but my original manager didn't care and this didn't happen), but I enjoyed working with everyone at the plant I was based so much I would go back again
Certainly felt valued (within the plant), as at the start of everyone would give give you that extra time whenever you where on a task or asking questions, then after 6 months everyone throughout the plant would see you as an established member of your department and I felt well valued. However on my global HSE side I felt forgotten by my original manager.
From my original manager I'm not sure if you can call it support or guidance at all really from him, he was hardly about and hard to contact and wouldn't give a clear direction. However I was under the management of the HSE co-ordinator and they gave me constant one to one support and guidance if I needed it, and also pushed me within the role and was a pleasure to work with!
It was massively varied, I could go for a couple of weeks with nothing really to do, but around February / March time I was extremely busy. It helped to get involved with other departments at times to increase my workload.
After a few months once I had gained experience and was comfortable there then I was given responsibility of a £100,000+ project, organising contractors to come in for various jobs. Then also there where days I was the only person in the department and I had to deal with any queries for our department which I felt at ease to manage
The skills I have developed whilst here have certainly been ones that will make working at my next job 10 times easier. However when it comes to assisting in my degree I fell it has made a minimum impact. Then I didn't receive any external training that I can take forward ,only training applicable to faurecia.
The Company
The Atmosphere in the office was great, it was relaxed but hard working. Everyone had a good laugh whilst not getting too distracted from work. Then it was a great atmosphere throughout the whole plant, where most people would be happy to help with any questions you had.
It seemed there never was a clear plan with me being based at the plant. As when I started started my manager wasn't around for the first week and the HSE co-ordinator at the plant wasn't told I was coming until the day I arrived. Then throughout 2016 the vision for HSE was constantly changing day by day and it was that badly set up I was seriously considering quitting.
My personal development was greatly invested by the one on one support from the HSE co ordinator but I never received any training that is going to be applicable to any other employers, and when we suggested about training / things that would develop me, then I was simply ignored or it got forgotten about.
The VIE scheme they have is a very interesting prospect which I would be interested in as this is a chance to get fast tracked to a job abroad for 3- 24 months. Then they have a similar graduate scheme which is based in the uk, however they want to study further as part of this, which is something that has massively put me off this role. Again you would get fast racked through this.
The Culture
We all got on pretty well, the other students and vie's would organise nights out most weeks which I was always busy for and unfortunately never went (also they were all based in lichfield). But we organised other things like going to watch a football match, and also playing football after work!
I lived in derby and lived in student accommodation, and petrol cost was only £20 a week, with a simple drive down the a38. Compared to living in birmingham it was well priced!
The one time I went into lichfield for a drink, it seemed an area for drinks for people over 30. However I never properly went out here.
