    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The vacation programme at KPMG has given me a great insight into the corporate world. I have very much enjoyed it and can certainly see a future within this industry. The environment for such a big firm was very welcoming and this made me very much want to work here in the future.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was able to ask anyone about anything, and felt any work I completed was highly appreciated. The office is a friendly environment and so I felt at home from day one. I was helped to settle in very nicely and my buddy was always on hand if I needed anything.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given guidance when I needed it. I was left to do work but if I had difficulty understanding anything I was give or I just needed to clarify a certain area of the work, I was always given help in a productive way. Everyone gave me work if there was any available that I was able to do as an intern.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would say intermittently. I was given work fairly frequently but there were times when there was no work for me to do, as summer isn't a particularly busy time for accounting firms and it was sometimes difficult for my colleagues to pass on work that, as an intern, I could complete with the level of knowledge I had.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility with regards to amending tax reports, EMI plans, entering data into spreadsheets etc. I felt this helped towards the work that KPMG was doing for clients, even if I was unable to have any interaction during briefings, phone calls and any other type of client engagement.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I cannot say as of yet because I am going into my third year in September, however I believe it will motivate me to work even harder in my final year to obtain a minimum of an upper second class degree In order to give myself the best chance of attaining a job at KPMG.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great. Although everyone is working hard, it feels like an environment that is friendly and welcoming. There is potential, if you desire, to get involved in work socials and there is certain events, for example every first Friday of the month there is drinks in the office. This adds to the friendly feel as the majority of people get on outside of the workplace too.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I feel as though the placement was set up well In terms of being assigned a buddy from the first day so I always had someone I could go to for work. However at certain times, once I moved to a different department after my second week, certain people weren't quite sure whether they could/should be giving me work when I asked them too, so, in that sense, it maybe could've been a little more organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the firm invested well in this sense. At the beginning I was given a taste of what the tax business school was like, having two days of induction there. This was great as I feel as though this is a great differentiator for KPMG compared to the other rbig 4 firms, and I felt I learnt a lot in those two days alone which I could apply once in the office. An example of this was the statutory residency test, which we learnt about at the business school and then I applied it to certain clients whilst in Global Mobility Services (GMS).

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I will have an interview on my penultimate day for a grad position. I feel this internship has been very valuable in the sense of being employable and it I am very appreciative of the fact I will be given a grad interview at the end of it. The employment rate from the vacation scheme is 85%, showing KPMG really invest in their interns and wish to keep them on if they fit the company criteria.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It is difficult to gauge this fully having only 4 weeks in the office, however I did feel there was a good social scene if you wanted to get involved. The company does hold certain events as I mentioned before, to encourage people to be social with each other. I think the clubs have a good social scene off what I have heard; the football team in London goes abroad yearly for a football tournament and to also socialise I believe.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My internship is in Manchester so the cost of living and socialising is not too bad If you know where to go! You can get a pint for £2.50 if you know the right places, but can also pay £10 for a cocktail in the northern quarter. It completely depends what social scene you as an individual prefer, but I would say, if you are tight for money, you can still enjoy Manchester's social scene. The cost of living is similar to the rest of the North of England, certainly nowhere near the extravagance of London!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • My internship is based near the town centre, so the Nightlife is very vibrant. Whether you want a few quiet ones in the pub or want to go out to clubs, Manchester has everything to offer. Whether you want a cheap night or extravagant and expensive, there's something for everyone here.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There is activities to get involved in; there Is many networks for people to get involved in (women's network, faith networks etc) and also clubs, such as Football in London and others such as squash in the regional offices, there is certainly opportunities to get involved. I believe it I possible to start your own club in your office as well, so if you desperately want a football team in the regional offices, you can start to think about beginning your own.
