About You
I enjoyed the insight a lot as everyone was extremely welcoming. I was given a lot of responsibility from day one. I really enjoyed the vacation scheme induction as it gave me the opportunity to meet likeminded graduates and individuals. I also really enjoyed the chance to go down to London to the tax business school as it gave me a really good insight as to what the graduate scheme in tax would be like.
I felt valued by all my colleagues including the managers on the job. They trusted that I would be able to complete work well and correctly and did not hesitate to let me ask any questions. People didn't talk much in the office whilst at work but at lunch time everyone was very friendly. I was also invited to company events including drinks after work and sports events.
I was always briefed on the tasks which I was doing and was never without someone which I could ask if I got stuck. The fact that KPMG assigns you a buddy at the beginning of the vacation scheme really helped as I felt comfortable to ask any questions. All of the graduates were also very supportive and let me know that they were happy to ask any questions that they may have as they had been through it before.
The scheme is not directly related to my degree therefore it may not have assisted me in my degree studies per se. However it did provide me with an insight of working life and gave me an experience of office life within a big firm like KPMG. I developed skills fo research as well as people skills. I have gained a lot of confidence on the scheme as I was forced to work alongside other peers and colleagues most of the time.
The Company
I would have liked the insight to be a little more structured. It seemed that some days I didn't have a lot to do and I was looking for more work constantly. I would have liked some set training or learning to do in the time that I didn't have a lot of work. Regarding the recruitment process however, it was very structured and you were always kept up to date on what the status of your application was.
The atmosphere was generally quiet yet really friendly. I would have liked for colleagues to interact a bit more with one another in the office as it was very quiet. However everyone is extremelynice to one another on approaching them and were always polite. They always asked how big events went such as my interview and seemed to really care.
KPMG as a firm is great at investing in its people. I attending numerous training days down in London Business School and all expenses were paid. In addition to this, I spent some time in Glasgow at an induction day as well as a corporate responsibility day. The company really do ensure that you are never out of pocket and have the best training and development available to you,.
The insight definitely helped me understand what it would be like to have a fulltime role with the firm. The tasks which I was given were very similar to those of the graduates and I was walked through what the graduates would do on an everyday basis. The tax business school visit to London also gave me an insight into what my first 9 months training in London would involve.
The company culture is illustrated throughout the office. And the insight programme really made me realise the company culture. Everybody was extremely nice and welcoming and the office in no way felthierarchical. Managers are mixed in with interns as well as grads and everyone gets along really really well. The partners were also very welcoming.
Daily work loads wer epretty monotonous and boring. There was the odd task that was reallyinteresting however there wasnot enough of these to fully realise what path you may want to take in the future. I did manage to experience half a day up in the audit department as well as half a day in advisory however, which helped me to realise what these other departments do.
Everything Else
I was paid an extremely good rate compared to many other internships. Interns are given the same as those on first year of the grad scheme. I was also given holidays despite only being there a month. All expenses to other offices were paid for and KPMG allowed you the time to claim these back in office. Overall they are 10/10 for this.
There were numerous occasions to network and meet other employees of the company or firm. We had a corporate responsibility day in Glasgow where all the interns from across Scotland came together. In addition there were numerous work social events which all the interns received an invite to. Sports is also a big part of KPMG and many of the employees play or go team up and participate in sporting events.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend as it certainly is great to have experience with such a big and well reputed firm. The work you do is very similar to a grad role and you are given a lot of responsibility. You are made to feel very welcome and I would definitely recommend/.
