The Role
It has been an extremely enjoyable experience. I have broadened my knowledge of various different areas within the Bank through work shadowing sessions and through talks from senior speakers. For example, I have learnt about the Data Science role which I am currently working in that I was previously unaware of. It's an experience I hope to continue through the graduation programme in the future.
In my current team in Data Science, my colleagues have been very welcoming. They were more than happy to explain all the details the role entails, help me prepare for the role and teach me the required information to take on projects within the team. A lot of the work I have been doing has been used by the team in their presentation/will be used by them in future work.
In terms of support given by my manager I received guidelines of what I had to do in order to complete my objectives and I knew what I had to achieve. However, this has been extremely proactive where I have undertook most of the work myself without much support. In my new team this is completely different where I have received significant support and guidance.
During the first week of my internship I wasn't so busy, but as the weeks have gone by, work has got progressively busier. Now that I have 4 projects that I am currently doing, the past few weeks have been very busy as I have been occupied with completing them and improving them.
Due to my internship experience being extremely intiative and proactive based I feel have been given significant responsibility in taking training upon myself, managing the projects I have been given by myself and managing my own time efficiently in order to meet my objectives and targets. Additionally, I was given responsibility in managing my own work shadowing and director meetings.
In my first team I expanded my knowledge of web deisgn and development through HTML/CSS/Less and Bootstrap and this will significantly help me in future web design projects I undertake. In my current team I have expanded my knowledge of R and Scala/Spark where I have been working on Anomaly detection which will assist my significantly in the future. I have also further broadened my problem solving, leadership, and time management skills which I hope to apply further in the future.
The Company
The atmosphere on my original floor was very chilled out with a semi-Google approach. In terms of dress attire unless you were meeting with clients they were very flexible with what you wore. Additionally, people were very welcoming to help others. We had a hot desking culture where you have no specific deks you are assigned to. Having a free coffee machine also helped.
It has been very organised in the sense that we have appraisal meet-ups with our line manager at the start, middle and end of the internship where we discuss the objectives set and comments we have and the line manager has. We have also had regular HR catch ups to ensure everything is going well.
Especially in my second team in the Data Science team I believe Barclays has significantly invested in me, in terms of training to ensure I have can potentially take on the role in the future. Additionally, I have learnt skills from the internship which I will be able to apply in the future such as my development skills in R, Scala/Spark.
In terms of securing the graduate offer this is something I will found out in the future. If I receive the graduate offer for technology I will be accepting the offer for working there after graduation. Hopefully, I will try and receive a rotation within the Data Science team as it is an area I am significantly interested in.
The Culture
There was a good social scene between my team and between interns that we set up ourselves. However, in terms of events set up by Barclays there was very little social activities which is something they should improve on for future interns as it would help interns to get to know one another.
Canary Wharf in London so relatively expensive.
N/A
I took part in a Cyber security/GIS Hackathon which is just one of the opportunites I had the chance to take part in. There are a lot of different opportunities in terms of extra projects that I have had the chance to participate in. For example, the Citizenship challenge where we have to present back to a charity
