The Role
I absolutely loved my internship with Grant Thornton. Nicest team in the nicest firm. And I did some really interesting work too.
Very valued. They really tried to make sure there was always something we could do for them, even if it took a bit of asking. Towards the end of my internship I was doing work that would normally be done by an executive. My colleagues were always really grateful for any work I did for them and made sure that I got feedback and supported and guided me with stuff I wasn't sure about.
My people manager, Sarah, was always able to talk if I had any issues or was confused about anything. She was very supportive, as were all members of my team.
It did take a while to start up in terms of having work to do, so at times it was very quiet but there are things you can work on such as the internship project and presentation we have to do, writing blogs for the trainee run website Spilling the Beans, or planning a social or fundraising event. But when there was work to do you do become very busy very quickly!
Quite a lot! I worked on some important reports, drafted tax advice notes for clients and dealt with a lot of confidential information. I was also trusted to represent the firm alongside a senior manager at a networking event at an asset management firm.
It really did! They invested a lot of time into me, making sure I could charge hours to get real client experience and getting me involved in real active projects so it was very hands on and very applicable to a future career in this industry. This internship has also helped me balance my calendar and keep on top of things at work. It's made me more outgoing, more confident in my presenting skills (as they send you on a two day course to their training facility in High Wycombe), and definitely upped my self confidence too.
The Company
Really warm and friendly. Yes people are busy but it's never silent. People are always up for a chat, they get lunch together and we'd often hang around whichever desk happened to have sweets on it! Everyone is fairly young and it's a pretty relaxed office environment, even when things can get a bit stressful.
Pretty well organised - they all knew we were coming in and we had all our IT set up for us. There were also a lot of intern events organised for us. However, next year it would be better if they didn't bring us in just at the end of the tax year, because it made our first week or so quite quiet as there wasn't much work for us.
So much. There was a two day training course we were all put on, we were able to attend an internally organised away day to the velodrome in the Olympic park, they facilitated us organising our own charity and social events, and also tried to expose us to as much of the industry as possible to give us a really broad understanding of as much as possible. I was also encouraged to present an idea I had to our leadership team; they really encouraged me to develop and give me the support necessary.

They've just offered me a graduate job and I am so excited to be coming back next year!
The Culture
Really great. We were really encouraged to link up with them and we generally got lunch and drinks together at least once a week. We also had some company events that were organised just for interns which were great fun. For the most part, we all got along really well and I've made some great friends.
I already lived in London, so I knew it was going to be high, and no one should come to London thinking otherwise. Travel isn't too bad when you have a zone 1-3 travel card, and you can find fairly well priced places to eat and drink in the area.
Great - it's London. There's everything.
