The Role
I really enjoyed working on the client site. I got to know my team very well and they all made me feel welcome. The initial 2 weeks I was in the office and I did not have very much work to do. I spent a lot of my time completing web based learning. Although this helped me gain an initial level of knowledge about audit and the insurance industry, it was not very stimulating. As I progressed in my internship, I was given more responsibility and this enabled me to develop my skills.
My team were very welcoming to me. They were very helpful when I had questions and included me in lunches. My team went for drinks and they arranged a team dinner for me at the end of my internship. This shows the extent to which they valued me. I feel I developed a good relationship with my colleagues and very much enjoyed working with them.
I was given good support by my supervisor. I was set work and she was willing to answer any questions that I had and support me as much as possible. other members of the team also offered me a good level of support. I very rarely found myself feeling unsure of what was expected from me, and when I did I was very happy to ask for further explanations. Management and supervisors invested a generous amount of time in supporting me.
This varied- some days I would find myself with lots of tasks and therefore being very busy. other days there would be less work for me. I had a variety of tasks, including tasks of different lengths and difficulty. for example, I was asked to complete Entity Level Control and Fraud Considerations forms which was a task that took me a few days. Other tasks would be much quicker, for example updating the CAS form.
The amount of responsibility I was given increased noticeably throughout my time on the client site. To begin with, I was given much simpler tasks and my work was closely reviewed. As I progressed, my team gained confidence in my ability and therefore gave me tasks that were of greater importance. I enjoyed the responsibility I was given- it was rewarding to know that the team had confidence in me.
I have grown in confidence during the internship. I feel as though I have become more professional through direct and indirect contact with clients. the interactions I have had will be beneficial to me. The technical skills I have learnt during my internship will help me in a graduate job, as I will already have had 6 weeks of audit experience. The majority of what I have leant/ gained has come from the tasks I have done, rather than direct training/ WBLs.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office was generally positive. I spent 4 weeks at the client site. Here, we all worked in an audit room together. The atmosphere was very friendly. When people had more work and as we got closer to deadlines, the atmosphere became a bit more serious, however this was good as it enabled everyone to get their work done. I enjoyed the atmosphere.
The work placement was quite well set up. Having a buddy and a counsellor to whom we reported weekly gave me a strong support network. However, I think that each interns experiences varied quite a lot, and therefore some will have gained a lot more than others, depending on their team/client etc. I think that it would have been beneficial if we had some social events organised for us as I spent hardly any time interacting with other interns.
The firm treated us very professionally, however I feel as though they did not invest so much in the social aspect.
Very appealing. If I get a job offer I would definitely like to re join EY once I have graduated. I feel as though I have warmed well to the company and the environment, and having already worked here for 6 weeks I feel I have a great insight as to what a job here would be like. I have spoken to people at all levels of the organisation, and they are all very positive about their jobs. I think EY would be a great company to work for.
The Culture
Amongst the fellow placement students, the social scene was not as good as I had initially hoped. The interns were all working in different departments and on different clients and therefore I struggled to meet most of the interns. Being on the client site for 4 weeks meant I did not see any of the interns. we had no intern socials organised for us which I think was slightly disappointing. with regards to the colleagues in my team, there was a greater social aspect. we had lunch together and went for dinner and drinks after work.
I live outside London and therefore travel costs were very expensive (£20/day). this was not something I could expense. In terms of socialising, drinks were expensive, however this is what I expected in London. Food was priced at a relatively reasonable level. I did not do any other social activities so cannot comment on the cost of these
For drinks, it was good- there were lots of bars and pubs around. However, I did not go to any clubs during my internship so cannot comment on this.
I joined the EY netball team. However, unfortunately I was not available to play in either of the 2 matches I was offered to. We were invited to join EY networks, however there did not seem to be much going on over the 6 weeks we were here. There were no other socials organised for us outside of work. We had to organise activities ourselves
