The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my internship at EY and especially liked the people who I came across and worked with. Not knowing what to expect, I found the 6 weeks here a great experience and would enjoy working with this company in the future. I had a great range of insight into day to day life at EY particularly in tax, and was also able to work with people in specialist services.
Everyone in the team I worked with made me feel very welcome and put aside time to let me work with them. My colleagues made me feel valued by inviting me to different calls or meetings, giving me jobs to do and giving me feedback. Throughout my internship I had meetings with individuals to talk through the work I'd done and to review my progress which including meeting goals and handing in work. This time they spent with me made me feel valued.
Great support was given to me as an intern. When I started I was appointed with a Buddy and Councillor - these two introduced me to the rest of the team and showed me around the office. They gave me a good introduction into Tax and answered all of my questions. I could approach both of these people if I had any worries or needed work to do. I also set goals with my councillor which we then discussed in terms of my progress. They also ensured I had a good EY experience.
Every day was different in terms of work load. I always found something to do - whether that was reviewing previous work, doing independent research or balancing several jobs I was given! Workload increased throughout the internship as I was able to do more and more jobs on my own. I never had free time or was in a situation where I could leave early - some days I even stayed slightly later! My colleagues ensured I always had something to be getting on with which made for a better experience at EY!
I had more responsibility towards the end of the internship. However that responsibility was mostly admin related. In terms of technical tax work nothing was my responsibility, and any work I completed that would reach clients was reviewed by managers or above. Whilst I was responsible for getting my work done, and to a high standard, no responsibility was on me to complete a project on my own.
The skills I have acquired during my internship are invaluable and will come in use in all areas of life - not just in my future career. Skills such as spreadsheets and admin will be of use to me in future office jobs. Also, the communication and people skills I have gained from this experience will stay with me in all areas of life. I have also become more confident as a result of stepping outside of my comfort zone during my time here.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was friendly and lively. Obviously there was variation depending on how many people were in the office and what peoples' work loads were like. There was a relaxed atmosphere with general conversation that anyone could join in on. It was not a tense environment and everyone was chatty and at ease. Lots of people were in phone calls or at breakout areas (like sofas) to discuss their work.
A very well organised internship with EY where everything ran smoothly. There was councillors and buddies for all interns which was a more informal relationship and a chance to ask any questions about work. There is also an internship team of 4-5 ish people who took care of the programme and arranged events such as partner breakfasts. This team were useful to contact about any concerns or questions about the recruitment process and what happens after the internship - e.g. when we'll hear about getting/not getting an offer onto the grad scheme.

I would very much like a job offer from EY based on my internship with them. I haven't heard what the outcome will be yet and am expecting to within 2 weeks or so after completing the internship placement. If I was given an offer I would most certainly take it!! It would be great to have a job to go to after uni without the worry of reapplying to things / online tests / interviews and starting a new job.
The Culture
I lived at home so living costs were nil. transport into the city centre was fairly cheap, especially with a railcard which saved me a lot of money. Socialising was as pricey as I wanted it to be. Obviously being a big city Birmingham socialising isn't cheap however there were no major costs. Outings with the company are always expenses which is good for socials with the team or any lunches out (which there were plenty of!)
