The Role
I've really enjoyed working for Centrica. When we started we were, within the stream we got our place in - mine being Analyst, matched to a job role that the Grad team thought would be most valuable to us. I was given a placement in Manchester in a team focusing on a customer experience. Originally I wouldn't have thought this kind of placement would suit me but I've really enjoyed my time here
Really valued! If I ever had a problem or something I didn't quite understand - from the beginning all the way through to now - I had no problem bringing it up and asking for help. If I had any ideas on how to help with anything or a suggestion of how to do something then it was listened to which was really nice.
Like I said before any issues I had I was more than happy to bring them up and ask any questions that I had. I had a weekly meeting with my manager to catch up with what I was doing and just to check I was on track throughout which was really good as if anything changed I could keep up to date and could change what I was up to if needed be!
Some days I would be crazy busy and others would struggle to have enough to do in a day but on an overall balance I had the right balance between being busy and not having enough to do. As I was left with my project to do and keep a balance of my own time I found that there would be days busier than others but this was not necessarily a bad thing!
I was given a project to go over throughout my placement and from there left to do it as I felt best. I wouldn't say I was given a lot of responsibility as the work I was doing was quite a supportive role to the other members within the team but if I needed to do anything particular as long as it was a beneficial role then I was givne the responsibility to do it as I thought best.
I've developed my skills a lot while here, especially within excel and general analysis - looking at spotting patterns and how to improve/change those. as I go into my final year of university this will definitely help assist within my degree as a lot of what I have to do as my degree is looking at data and numbers and finding patterns within it so this will definitely help me out
The Company
There was a really good balance between it being serious and relaxed. I felt really welcome and this made for the atmosphere to feel a lot better for me personally. The office is really open plan with banks of desks and teams sit around one set of desks and it feels really comfortable around that. There's always something going on and it's a positive place to be
Really well. You apply to the stream you think will suit you and then have the relevant interviews, assessment days etc. As you're going they keep pretty detailed records about you and how you perform in each area. They then match you to one of the available placements in your stream based on how you've performed in each area and on your cv and you can be placed anywhere in the UK and I feel that they seem to do a really good job on matching people up with roles!
Quite a lot! We had development days with all the other interns and presentation days to help us learn how to 'present with impact' ahead of our final presentations so that we feel confident before going into the final presentation that we have to do as part of our presentation. The development day was great - we did loads of group stuff with other interns, both physically and mentally challenging - and quite a few interns who I hadn't met before! All travel and accommodation is paid for!

Really good and the whole scheme is there with a view if you perform well then you can get onto their grad scheme which is a pretty lucrative one! If you did the summer placement on one stream and decide that you think for doing the grad scheme you would suit a different stream there is quite a bit of manoeuvrability and you can talk to people in other streams both on the grad scheme and within the summer placement.
The Culture
Yeah really good. You get given accommodation for the length of the placement so depending on where you are based as a intern it depends on how many others you live with and then what your social scene is like. I wasn't based in the main area but i got on really well with the people I lived with so lots of going out and doing various bits together which was really nice!
Living costs we didn't have to pay as it is part of the placement deal which makes a massive difference in terms of affordability of living and a massive perk of the scheme as trying to find somewhere to live for 10 weeks in a different city would've been really difficult! Socialising where I am based is relatively cheap and food and stuff is cheap as well, obviously dependant on what you buy etc but pretty good
really good, loads of different areas to go out in and something for everyone - really good bars and quite a few that specialise in different types of drinks etc. Always really busy at weekends and the location of the accommodation they provide is pretty close by to the centre of town so perfect for going out! there's loads of places for food and good cinemas etc if going out isn't your thing but something to do after work in the evening appeals!
As part of the placement we had to be part of a charity group and try and raise as much money as we can for the charity the company sponsors. I worked at a soup kitchen which was a different experience but so so worth it! We are also buddied up with someone on the grad scheme based in the same area that we're based in and where we are they do a weekly meet up going for food or doing some sort of activity thing and that's a really fun thing to do and a nice break from work!
