The Role
The environment is very dynamic, welcoming and full of opportunities to put yourself at stake. However, the working hours are tough, and sleep-deprivation can impact your enthusiasm. Overall, the team is great, people are highly motivated and you get an enjoyable experience.
I do feel that they believed in my potential and tried to make sure that I felt challenged all the time.
I have been explained everything, but sometimes, since everyone is very busy, they struggle with answering follow-up questions and you have to sort it out yourself. You get to do a first week of training, but the technical part is poor and you don't learn much.
You come in at 8.30 and you are given work almost immediately, and leave after midnight once you are done with your work. My team was very market-driven, hence you have to work at fast-pace and there is always work to do. Since I interned during the summer, some weeks - when the seniors were on holidays - it was more quiet.
Even at day-one you are given a piece of work to do, but you often work on the smallest part of a bigger project.
I have learnt determination, teamwork, how to focus, how to cope with stress, how to work in a hierarchical environment, and many other soft skills which I will be able to apply at any stage of my work or study path. But then I have learnt many hard skills, such as how to use a particular software, how a deal is brought through, what is the protocol, and loads, loads of excel.
The Company
Very hectic, and driven by the personalities of the colleagues. If you are lucky - as I was - you can get a beautiful atmosphere that makes going to work pleasurable.
Very well. Assessment centre consisted of several steps (as for most investment banks), the HR are incredible and follow you in every single step, before and during the internship.
It could be done more. Many trainings were more a façade, and they didn't make sure to have high-quality people.
In terms of headcount, I believe that approximately 60% will get an offer after the internship, but it's just a gut-feeling. Competition is high, so you need to stand out and to come from a very solid background.
The Culture
Really good. Since the very beginning, and throughout the internship. Even in the moments in which we were judged individually (e.g. the case study at the end of the internship), people always helped one another and everyone has each other back.
Living in London drains your finances and you definitely don't have time to go out much - maybe you get one night out once every week.
Nightlife it's insane, but it's what you would expect from London. Too bad you don't have any time at all to enjoy it.
Opportunities are there, they promote volunteering and networking events. Again, does it really matter when you barely have time to sleep?
