The Role
I enjoyed it hugely. Not only were the people I was working with extremely welcoming and great to work with, the projects I was working on were highly engaging and involving. There was good chemistry around the office and working towards and at events where the Volvo Group exhibited at were great fun as well.
I felt like a fully fledged employee who had been working there for a number of years and not a placement student which goes to show the respect and trust at the Volvo Group. I would be assigned important and very public tasks meaning that my superiors thought highly of my abilities and valued me as a capable member of the marketing team.
The department was very open in the way that I was made to feel welcome to sit down with my Manager and express any concerns I may have had. Often we would have one on one meetings to asses not only my list of jobs but also how I was getting on in the department and in general. The training was very thorough and everyone in the marketing team and out were open to questions and happy to help.
There was always work to be done and as a relatively small marketing department a lot of pressure was put on us by different areas of the company. Saying this there was never a time I felt buried and with the work varying from short to long turnaround there was always more work to pick up If I had the time. I never felt like a couldn't take a holiday or an afternoon off.
I was placed as Manager for a number of tasks communicating on a daily basis directly with multiple agencies, dealers, customers and managers of different departments of the company. Being a small department I was placed as the point of contact and in charge of multiple account often updating my manager as to the progress and taking guidance as and when.
There is no doubt that an industrial placement will help your studies and employability at university and after. With a working knowledge of the marketing procedure, client marketing, working in a large organisation with multiple department and general office etiquette, working with the Volvo Group was invaluable to my skill set. In addition I was trained and self-trained on numerous softwares and developed skills on those already known. I managed to secure a summer job at one of the Volvo Group's agencies based on my work with them and my knowledge of the industry.
The Company
Positive and buzzing with creative flair. The marketing office was lively with conversation and had a relaxed feel despite the suits and ties. Everyone would be talking about what work they were doing, if anyone had any input as well as discussing other areas of the company and events coming up in the future. The Volvo Group is very sociable with a lot of cress-departmental work so you get to know everyone in the building.
We had a great HR department who were always on hand to answer any employee question regarding pensions, pay, holidays etc and were great in setting up my placement at the start. I was in constant communication with the marketing and HR departments in build up to my placement answering any questions I may have had.
I was placed on training courses for the companies alongside other permanent starters to learn the background and the working of the Volvo Group and the brands. I also got to shadow senior members of the marketing department and members of other department to understand the workings of the entire company. I worked for a few days at one of the agencies to get some agency experience and attended other agencies on site visits to understand the extent of how they worked.

With my knowledge and experienced gained from my years experience it would be very easy and appealing for me to slip into a permanent role and I would seriously consider applying if a position become available. Being a worldwide company there would be possibilities to work overseas which really appeals to me as well as the other internal brands. My placement has allowed me to network across all departments so I have the contacts for the future.
The Culture
There were only a handful of students working at the Volvo Group and apart from an initial welcome lunch we were left to our own devices to organise anything social. Fortunately we knew each other form outside of Volvo so that wasn't a problem. For the company Volvo were excellent in organising social events including a Christmas Party with open bar, a Queen's 90th Birthday/Wimbledon fete and summer event all with games, stalls and food.
As the main office is located in Warwick I chose to stay in Coventry where I go to University but remained living with University mates meaning I didn't totally lose the uni lifestyle. Therefore accommodation was cheap and living costs similar to living at University however you had to factor in the cost of commuting. When possible try and lift share to save petrol
There was a choice of bars, clubs, restaurants, cinemas etc and being in my Uni town I got to take part in the usual sort of events taking the day after on holiday if necessary. There were places nearer the office Warwick or Leamington where my we would go if it was an office related event however Coventry was the main hub of nightlife.
There was a 5 a side football team and an onsite gym which catered for most of your fitness needs, There were also cultural trips organised to landmarks, attractions and further-away cities such as London available if that interested you. Tickets to the Theater and other events were also made aware to the entire employee base.
